About the job

  • Do you want to be part of the future Emergency Department at Hvidovre Hospital?

The Emergency Department at Hvidovre Hospital is the entry point for the majority of the hospital's acute patients. The good patient pathways therefore start in the emergency department. To succeed it requires high professional expertise, good collaboration, education and engagement in ongoing development of the emergency area.

We have now been in our new emergency department for 2 years. This period has taught us that the emergency physician must stand more at the front than we do today. This is in good accordance with the description of the core tasks of the specialty:

  • Medical triage and admission
  • Acute treatment and stabilization
  • Diagnostics.

Do you want to be part of our team and help us work in that direction? Do you want to participate in a generational shift in the department? - Then you may be our new specialty doctor/consultant colleague in the emergency department.

A modern Emergency Department in development

We work purposefully to create cohesive and time-driven patient pathways and at the same time create good conditions for education, research and a good working environment. Development and implementation of new and improved work processes is therefore an important part of our daily life.

The Emergency Department also takes a central role in implementing the decisions from the Health Council Amager and Vestegnen and in developing the “outward-facing hospital”. This is a large and exciting task that will affect both our cooperation across the hospital and our way of working with patient pathways.

We have a specialty doctor on-call backup presence 24/7/365, supported by well-functioning multidisciplinary teams, which contribute to admission decisions, patient flow and logistics in a busy department. Our junior doctors work supervised.

From the turn of the year the hospital also has a 24/7 internal medicine physician physically present in the Emergency Department in addition to our on-call backup.

The Emergency Department

The Emergency Department consists of

  • Trauma area with 16 bays for trauma patients.
  • Trauma room with 3 trauma bays.
  • Assessment area with 12 patient rooms and 8 bays. Here we handle medical and surgical patients with an expected length of stay of less than 6 hours.
  • 70 patient rooms distributed over 3 acute units. All admissions of 6-48 hours are received here.

The department has 11 consultants, 8 HU doctors and 4 junior doctors attached. Consultants and junior doctors from the hospital's other specialties also have permanent roles in the Emergency Department. In addition there are 220 nurses, 70 secretaries and a large number of hourly-paid staff.

Patients are admitted based on their symptoms and expected duration of treatment. Expected treatment duration of 0-6 hours is handled in the trauma section or in the assessment area. If the expected treatment duration is assessed to be 6-48 hours or longer, the patient starts in our acute unit.

In total, about 300 patients are received daily at Hvidovre Hospital and about 50 patients at the Emergency Clinic at Glostrup Hospital, which also belongs to the Emergency Department.

In the Emergency Department we have an imaging diagnostic unit with 2 ultrasound rooms, 2 X-ray rooms, 2 CT scanners and 1 MRI scanner, which supports acute imaging diagnostics.

Your work functions

As a senior consultant/specialist, you will administratively and clinically report to the chief physician in the Emergency Department. You will contribute both to organizing flow and leading the on-call team, reception, stabilization and treatment of patients with time-critical illnesses, as well as diagnostics and treatment of larger and smaller unresolved acute conditions. You will, together with the team of other specialists, be part of the education and supervision of our YL (young doctors).

Who are you?

You are a specialist in acute medicine, soon finishing your main specialty training in acute medicine or a related specialty with the willingness to possibly begin extended training in acute medicine.

  • Passionate about acute medicine and ultrasound
  • Can balance education in a running organization
  • Enjoy teaching and supervising your colleagues
  • Will contribute to a good educational and working environment

Why you should apply

  • We are one of the country’s largest acute hospitals with visions and plans for the emergency area
  • You will have influence on the development of the emergency area
  • We are a team under development and expansion – there is a possibility to become part of something new
  • Good collaboration with the hospital’s other departments
  • Possibility to participate in research in the emergency area
  • Possibility for own areas of responsibility

Work organization

You will join a 24/7 on-call function with presence together with the other emergency medicine and internal medicine departments’ specialists. You will be part of the on-call backup function for the on-call team consisting of intermediate on-call shifts and KBU doctors. There will be activities in all of the department's tracks (trauma area, assessment area and acute unit).
