About the job
Some children need more than a safe base. They need adults who continue to be there – even when things are difficult. Adults who can create calm, hold on to the relationship, and help them see that something can change.
That is part of what you become part of as a pedagogue at Langebyhus.
We are looking for a pedagogue who wants to work with children and young people who, for various reasons, cannot live at home. The children have often experienced neglect and may need special support to build trust, to engage in relationships, and to manage their emotions.
It is a task that requires professionalism, patience and presence. And where even small steps can mean a great deal.
At the same time, Langebyhus is a place in development. We look forward and are together shaping the culture and daily life we want. Here you get the opportunity to contribute and to make your mark.
How could your working day look?
Every day is different, but imagine you start at 6.30 a.m. and receive a handover from the night shift. Together you set the framework for the morning wake‑up and help the children get a good start to the day. Clothes need to be found, breakfast eaten and perhaps a little extra support provided to get them to school.
When the children are sent off, your colleague from the night shift goes home. Your day then continues with practical tasks such as laundry and support for tidying the rooms for the children who need it.
You check the groceries for the evening meal and review whether the home presents as welcoming and ready for the afternoon. You follow up on journal entries and risk assessments and accompany a child to the dentist.
You return before another child comes home from school with a very special experience: for the first time the child has managed an entire school day. You and your colleagues stand ready at the entrance to Langebyhus to welcome the child, cheer and celebrate it.
For us who follow the child closely, it is precisely these moments that make the work meaningful.
If you are on an afternoon/evening shift, you start at 1.00 p.m. You and your colleagues begin with overlap from the morning shift, and together you plan the rest of the day.
Today you will support your designated contact child, who goes boxing. You have decided to invite another child along, as the child is exploring which leisure interest could be interesting.
You return when dinner is ready. After dinner you support another child in taking a bath and a third child with folding and tidying the laundry.
The children’s day ends with tucking in two children, shaking out the comforter, and talking a little about the day.
The shift ends with journal entries and preparing the house for the night shift.
During the day you will discuss professional considerations with your colleagues, and you help each other with the tasks that arise. You also talk through big and small things – perhaps how the weekend went, or what else fills daily life.
Who are we at Langebyhus?
At Langebyhus children and young people aged 3–22 may live who, for various reasons, cannot live at home. We also have two apartments for vulnerable families and young people in the process of outflow.
The children have often experienced difficult things early in life and may need special support to build trust, engage in relationships, and manage their emotions. Some may react with outwardly aggressive behavior, self-harm, or sexualized behavior. This requires our professionalism and the ability to remain calm – and that we use each other and our shared professional stance.
In many ways we are surrogate parents in the children’s daily lives. We provide care, presence and clear boundaries. We help with all that belongs to a child and adolescent life, and we are there when something becomes difficult. It requires that we can be persistent adults whom the children can rely on – even when they themselves have difficulty letting us in.
Our pedagogical work is based on a shared understanding, where we draw on systemic thinking, mentalization-based environmental therapy and a psychodynamic and relational approach.
This means we are curious about what lies behind the child’s behavior, and we work to understand the child’s reactions and needs. We actively use the relationship to create security and give the children new experiences with adults.
We collaborate closely with the children’s families, networks and other professionals because we know that the child’s development does not happen only at Langebyhus.
What do you get with us?
You become part of a multidisciplinary staff group where we include, among others, pedagogy graduates, a nurse, a teacher, a social worker and family therapists. We are good at using each other’s professional strengths and discuss both the good and the difficult experiences together. We help each other when something is hard, and we celebrate the children’s progress together. You are not alone with the tasks.
The work is meaningful and personally developmental. You get the opportunity to help create changes in the lives of children and young people – even when it concerns small steps that mean a lot.
You also get the opportunity for ongoing professional sparring and we have access to a wellbeing consultant if there is a need to attune the nervous system and obtain external reflection on our work.
Who are you?
We hope you are a qualified pedagogue with experience or interest in development processes for children and young people who have experienced neglect. You may be newly educated or have several years of experience. If you have another relevant health professional background, we would also like to hear from you.
The most important is that you
- are motivated to build stable and secure relationships with the children
- can stay calm and stand firm, even when the children react strongly
- are caring, patient and curious about what lies behind the child’s behavior
- dare take responsibility and at the same time ask for sparring when you need it
- are keen to reflect on your own practice and learn together with others
