Educator sought for Synscenter Refsnæs in Kalundborg

Are you motivated to work in a special pedagogical teaching environment for students with visual impairment, other disabilities, as well as mild autism and ADHD? Can you see yourself thriving in a smaller school setting with a low student–teacher ratio, where presence and relationships are in focus, and are you open to close, interdisciplinary collaboration?

We are seeking a pedagogue as of January 1, 2027, including to support students, and in the coming school year will join one of the school’s four interdisciplinary teams.

We are particularly looking for a pedagogue with special educational knowledge and experience within mild autism and ADHD. You must be able to translate your professional knowledge into practice and contribute to creating structure, predictability, participation opportunities, and well-being for students with special needs within the autism spectrum and ADHD.

The target group consists of students with visual impairment, who may also have cognitive, social, or developmental challenges, including autism spectrum disorders and ADHD. Experience with this student group will therefore be a great advantage.

The staff group in the school area consists of a total of 24 employees, composed of different professions such as teachers, pedagogues, pedagogical assistants, an occupational therapist and teaching assistants. The interdisciplinary team works closely to support students’ learning in connection with their teaching activities, as well as the health and care tasks related to the students.

Our core task

Our target group is children and young people where vision is one of the primary functional limitations – typically in combination with other sub-issues, e.g. social isolation, school refusal, or brain-related visual impairment (CVI). Characteristics of the target group are that the level of development, academic and social skills range from significantly impaired to just below life expectancy.

We work with an appreciative approach to the student, focusing on what the individual student is good at. We strive for students to become as academically competent as they can be, and to develop into as independent and socially competent as possible, so they have maximum opportunity to influence their own lives.

Tasks are solved in close collaboration among staff at the School, which includes teachers, health professionals, occupational therapy staff and pedagogical personnel. We work with focused supervision and involvement of professionals with knowledge about the students’ problems. The collaboration also includes the residence at Synscenter Refsnæs, where most of the students live, as well as collaboration with external municipal partners.

What are we looking for?

We are seeking a trained pedagogue who can see themselves as part of our core task with this group of students. This is especially important to us:

• You are a trained pedagogue and have special pedagogical knowledge about mild autism and ADHD
• If you have knowledge of and experience with students with visual impairments that is an advantage, but not a requirement
• You are proactive and solution-oriented
• You can be observant and able to observe groups of students, individual students, or adults’ approach to the students, for sparring and guidance
• You have experience with the school sector, STU and activity and social opportunities
• You can use IT and have experience with documentation tasks
• You have knowledge of and familiarity with alternative communication methods
• You have experience with observation
• You work in a structured and responsible manner
• You have experience with parent collaboration and possibly with municipal partners (e.g., UU counselors, disability consultants, caseworkers, etc.)
• You are a team player and make your colleagues better
• You have good relational skills and lots of humor
• That you contribute to the nursing- and health-related tasks that accompany the students/citizens

The position is 30 hours paid per week. Since the school is closed during school holidays and public holidays, the hours are distributed over the school weeks and the weekly working time will be approximately 33-35 hours per week, and also includes occasional substitute work in the school classes.

Working hours are during daytime—primarily from 7:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There may be occasional meetings after 3 p.m.

Starting salary for collective agreement employees

The region is obliged to inform you about the starting salary for the position. You will be informed of base salary, centrally fixed allowances and pension under the relevant collective agreement. In addition to the starting salary, the pay may include any negotiated allowances depending on the position, your experience, and qualifications.

Synscenter Refsnæs is the national special educational resource and knowledge center for children and young people with visual impairment, including blindness. Children and young people who are registered in the Synsregister or meet the criteria can use the services. The target group also includes children and young people with additional disabilities including blindness.

Synscenter Refsnæs is a highly specialized service that works knowledge-based and multidisciplinary with development, learning, well-being, and citizenship for the target group in nationwide collaboration.

The services include knowledge work, specialized guidance and counseling, individual assessment, course offerings and group programs, material production, school, after-school care, STU and residential care.
