About the job

Do you want to be academically challenged, work independently and become an expert on a broad range of medical diseases?

At the Medical Acute Ward (MAA) Slagelse Hospital we receive patients with undiagnosed symptoms across almost all medical specialties. We must quickly form an overview, assess the patient's condition, and together with the physician determine the right treatment and the further course.

We are looking for nurses who want to learn new things, take responsibility and contribute to a professional community. You may be newly qualified or experienced; we offer a thorough introduction that helps you enter the role well and safely.

” The Medical Acute Ward is, for me, a department where you have the opportunity to learn a lot. The icing on the cake is a fantastic staff group where we help each other.” – Anne, nurse MAA

Your daily life at MAA At MAA we work with assigned patient care. This means that you, together with the physician, take care of your patients from admission to discharge or transfer. We discharge about 70% of our patients and transfer the rest to specialty departments.

You receive and triage patients, initiate necessary treatment, follow up on investigations and coordinate the further course. Upon discharge or further admission you ensure the necessary documentation and contact with relatives, the municipality or the ward. No two days are the same, and in your daily work you will encounter many different illnesses and medical specialties.

Your introduction We know that working at MAA demands your professional competence. Therefore, we offer all new employees a structured introduction program with three competency cards.

The first ‘card’ is a 6-week combination of internal teaching and clinical work together with a colleague. During the 6 weeks you are non-normed and in the last two weeks our onboarding nurse will observe a patient admission and assess what you need in the further introduction. When you are ready to receive patients independently, you have completed Competence Card 1.

After Competence Card 1, you transition to a 6-month mentoring program. You participate in additional training and complete the other competency cards during the six months.

Your Competence Development With experience there are good opportunities for further development in MAA. You can work and train toward taking on some of the department's special functions, such as clinical supervisor, mentor, coordinating nurse or key person. In the longer term there may also be opportunities for a diploma education or other further education depending on your interests and the department's needs.

Your Work Schedule You will as a rule be employed in rotating shifts in a three-shift system with work every other weekend.

However we strive as much as possible to accommodate individual wishes regarding the schedule. Depending on your wishes there may be, for example, the possibility of two-shift schedules with as even distribution of shifts as possible and 12-hour shifts on weekends with the possibility of working every third weekend.

The possibilities are agreed with management. Operations must hold together, but we actively work to find solutions where work and private life can be reconciled as well as possible.

Our Culture We want an informal but professional culture characterized by equality, mutual trust and professional pride. We have different tasks, but everyone contributes to the whole. We emphasize speaking to and about each other with respect, sharing our knowledge and helping each other when daily life is busy.

” The department is my second home. Here I feel safe, learn something new every day and have the best colleagues around me.” – Ann-Sofie, nurse MAA
