About the job

Outreach Archivist at Aalborg City Archive

Can you make people see what an archive can do?

Aalborg City Archive is seeking an outreach archivist for 37 hours per week.

We are looking for you who want to open the archive to more user groups and show what our collection can actually be used for. Therefore you must be able to challenge the perception that archives are mainly for historians, genealogists and other specialists.

For many, an archive is still a place with old documents, photographs and boxes on shelves. But an archive is much more than that. It is access to our shared memory and knowledge about people, places, decisions, everyday life and the development of society, both locally – in the Municipality of Aalborg – but also regionally and nationally.

Your most important task will therefore be to communicate the archive's collection, as well as the archive as an institution .

You should make it easier for people to understand what we have, how to find it, how to use it, and why it is relevant. And you should help show which questions an archive can help answer – including questions that users may not even know we can assist with.

What can you use an archive for?

That is a question we would like to be able to answer even better.

As an outreach archivist, you will help make the archive's collection and professional knowledge accessible to many different people. It could be the citizen looking for information about their house. The researcher who needs a particular source. The student who is studying their city. The journalist searching for documentation or the curious Aalborg resident who simply wants to know more about the street where they live.

To answer the above inquiries you must have the curiosity to develop an overview of the many sources in the archive's collections, ranging from our very large municipal archive to corporate archives and smaller personal archives. And the sources can be analog, such as documents, minutes, etc., or digital in the form of the many databases we preserve.

Your tasks

You will among other things

  • develop and implement communication about Aalborg City Archive, the archive's collection, the archive's areas of work etc.
  • maintain the daily operation of the archive's reading room with public contact, guidance and response to inquiries in collaboration with colleagues.
  • case management of citizens' and researchers' applications for access to archival materials with personal data.
  • communicate what archival materials are, how they are created, and how they can be used as sources
  • develop outreach that gives different target groups the desire and ability to explore the archive themselves
  • create content for the press, social media, website, local intranet, events and other relevant channels
  • develop new formats and ways to communicate the archive's possibilities
  • plan and carry out guided tours, introductions, lectures, workshops and educational programs
  • collaborate with schools, educational institutions, associations, cultural institutions, media and other partners
  • contribute to the archive's other tasks

An important part of the job will be to translate the archive's professional knowledge . You must be able to take something that is obvious to a professional archivist and make it interesting and understandable for people who have never set foot in an archive.

We imagine you

  • are motivated to work with the sources of Aalborg's history
  • are a lively communicator who thrives on being in
  • are good at making complex material understandable and interesting
  • are curious about people and what makes them engage
  • can see opportunities in the archive's professional knowledge itself, but also in the historical content of the collection
  • want to experiment with different formats and audiences
  • can think strategically about communication, but also produce and carry it out yourself
  • can communicate both verbally, in writing and digitally
  • are good at collaboration and relationship building
  • have the courage to question our habits and ways of doing things

It is an advantage if you have experience with archives, history, museum work, teaching, communication or other dissemination.

Your background

You may be a historian or have another humanities degree, but you could also have training in communication, journalism, cultural dissemination, teaching or the like.

The most important is that you have the willingness and perhaps experience to create understanding of the archive's collection and communicate it to others .

We expect you to be curious, keen to learn and willing to ask the questions our users might also ask.

We offer

You will become part of Aalborg City Archive, where 13 employees work with different aspects of the archive's tasks. We are a workplace with an informal tone, flexibility and room for professional discussion and new ideas.

You will play a central role in making Aalborg City Archive more visible, accessible and relevant.

There is a strong possibility to help define how we will in the future communicate what an archive is, what we have, and what you can use us for .

The position is 37 hours per week .
