About the job

Do you want to lead one of the country’s most respected birth centers – and help ensure strong professional quality, sustainable working lives and development in women’s health? Then you may be our new Chief Midwife.

A leadership with significance

As Chief Midwife with us you, together with the Chief Physician, will share responsibility for leadership and development in a department where safety, atmosphere and relationships shape both the good patient journeys and the staff’s wellbeing.

You will play a central role in further developing our strong professional environment in a department that each year handles about 3,200 births – and which, according to Dagens Medicin, has been ranked Denmark’s best obstetrics department nine years in a row based on systematic efforts to continuously develop our quality. At the same time, we have strong ambitions to maintain our position as a frontrunner for an attractive and sustainable workplace, where we have challenged conventional thinking and frameworks and introduced, among other things, a 4-day workweek and flex-midwives.

About the position

As department head you report to health and hospital leadership, and you become part of a department leadership circle that has a strong sense of community, and which helps, inspires and learns from one another. We are focused on transformation, involvement and sustainable leadership and have a focus on developing health offerings closer to citizens and in coordination with central health actors.

We anticipate a health reform that opens up new possibilities to also develop the pregnancy, birth and postnatal area across hospital, municipalities and general medical services. As Chief Midwife you will become part of a management group that is focused on how strategy, coordination and committee work become a driver in the development of the professionalism and innovation that are the pillars of an outward-facing hospital, which actively contributes to shaping the future health landscape in the Western Denmark Health Area with citizens at the centre.

You will be a visible leader who creates direction and following through dialogue, trust and clear communication. You will bring together professional disciplines, municipalities, health visitors, general practice and civil society to create the best possible journeys before, during and after birth. In cross-sector collaboration you will rethink workflows and organization so that more services come closer to families.

Your task is to translate the reform’s ambitions of proximity, accessibility and equality in health into concrete improvements that families feel through high quality, coordinated transitions and coherent care paths.

In our approach to leadership we address our task, role and responsibility with a holistic view for both core mission, employees, patients, citizens and their relatives. We will succeed through a collaborative culture and manage our departmental leadership in a parallel consortium between the Chief Midwife and the Chief Physician. Together you are responsible for the strategic development, professional direction and daily operations of the department in close cooperation with the overall leadership group.

At the same time you are expected to actively contribute to the development of the specialty both regionally and nationally, and in addition to leadership you will be involved in the daily operations and help lead the development of a department in a health system undergoing change. The health reform must be translated into concrete professional and organizational priorities that strengthen quality, accessibility and coherence for families across municipalities, general practice and hospital.

This requires strong cross-sector collaboration and the ability to create direction and momentum in a time of change. At the same time, the development provides an opportunity to rethink workflows, organization and new innovative solutions so that more services can be brought closer to citizens and future coherent family pathways can be developed across geography and sectors.

The position includes, among other things, responsibility for

  • setting a clear strategic direction for the department’s development
  • strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration within and around the department
  • exercising strategic and professional leadership of pregnancy, birth and postnatal care, and women’s health
  • developing an attractive and sustainable working environment for both leaders and staff
  • quality assurance and professional development in all maternity care, both internally and in close collaboration with the leading health visitors in our 6 municipalities
  • co-responsibility for optimal resource use and planning
  • continued development of our learning and improvement culture

We offer you

  • A solid professional and organizational foundation to build on
  • An engaged staff group who are passionate about their profession
  • A leadership team where cooperation, inspiration, courage and helpfulness are keywords

As we seek a Chief Midwife who together with the Chief Physician can unite people around a common ambition and create development through dialogue, you should be eager to be visible, curious and present in everyday life while being able to navigate a health system in transformation. As Chief Midwife you will have a unique opportunity to bring together professions, municipalities and partners to create the best possible journeys for families.

There is a possibility to participate in clinical work to the extent that the leadership role allows.

Your profile and leadership values

  • You are a trained midwife
  • You have leadership experience that matches the position – preferably complemented by relevant leadership education
  • You have experience with or interest in strategic leadership in a complex organization and an understanding of how health policy decisions impact the department’s future work
  • You can create a collaborative space where we share perspectives, coordinate understanding, activate knowledge and learn from our mistakes
  • You create direction by involving others, finding solutions together and establishing follow-through and ownership
  • You can create wellbeing through openness, trust and mutual expectation alignment
  • You are a guarantor of propriety and have the courage to show vulnerability and be in process
  • You have a positive mindset that rubs off on your surroundings
  • You are motivated to deliver results and quality at a high professional level in an environment where the good workplace is created collectively

More about the department

Women’s health and Births handle tasks in modern settings, where the delivery unit, acute clinic, postnatal care, midwifery consultations, secretariat, family clinic and clinic for pregnant women – are consolidated in the “Family Cluster.” Here we focus on creating coherent paths for families, and on ensuring that all staff experience professional sparring, learning and development in everyday work.

We have strong values: Safety, Atmosphere and Relationships which you will feel and experience, for example as:

  • Safety in terms of high quality and a persistent, systematic effort to improve our quality
  • An atmosphere with a uniquely nurturing birth environment with interactive delivery rooms, postnatal rooms with a double bed for the partner and work with sound design. Atmosphere also refers to the mood we create together with couples and among colleagues.
  • Relationships through working with four well-known midwifery schemes, because we believe continuity and familiarity significantly contribute to couples’ security and experience.
