About the job

Would you like to make a difference for vulnerable citizens with debt problems – then become part of The Danish Consumer Council Think's Economic and Debt Counseling as a volunteer

Economic distress and debt problems occupy a large part of daily life for vulnerable citizens who have lost oversight of their finances. Together with other competent and engaged volunteers you have the opportunity to help these vulnerable citizens get back on the right track.

The Danish Consumer Council Think is continually seeking new volunteers with an economic, legal or social-science background to become advisers in our economic and debt counseling for financially vulnerable citizens.

We need volunteer debt advisers for our counseling centers in Aalborg, Aarhus, Esbjerg, Kolding, Copenhagen, Nykøbing Falster, Odense and Ringsted.

As an adviser you will have the primary dialogue with citizens seeking advice on finances and debt.

You help create an overview and develop an action plan, and you are responsible for ensuring the advice is conducted in a trusting and safe atmosphere.

Your tasks include, among others

  • Analysis of a citizen's financial situation and debt level
  • Development of a budget and a financial overview
  • Identification of various solution options and help in selecting a strategy
  • Advice on rights in the debt area
  • Development of an action plan
  • Guidance and assistance in entering into settlements and agreements with creditors
  • Help with applications for e.g. debt relief or write-off

We expect that you

  • have a desire to use your skills to make a significant and positive difference for others
  • have a financial, legal or social-science background or are a student in the final part of your studies
  • have patience, human insight and good communication skills, since you will be dealing with people who often have other challenges besides financial problems
  • have basic IT skills
  • can set aside about four hours per week and ideally commit to at least one year

We offer

  • thorough introduction and ongoing upskilling as well as the opportunity to spar with a professional staff member
  • opportunity to use your education and experience to help others who are in a difficult situation
  • a social and professional network: You will expand your network while developing your personal competences

The counseling is typically in the afternoon hours. See the opening hours in the advisory services here.
