Residence permit
What does it mean?
A residence permit (opholdstilladelse) is the right to live in Denmark. Citizens of countries outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland and the Nordic region need one if they want to live here for a longer period — for example to work, study or live with family.
If you apply to work, you usually get one combined permit for residence and work. It is time-limited and can be extended if the conditions are still met. Family members can in many cases apply for residence together with you.
The residence permit is a prerequisite for being registered in the CPR register and getting a CPR number. You receive a residence card as documentation.
EU/EEA citizens do not need a residence permit, but must register and get a registration certificate for longer stays. See the current rules on nyidanmark.dk.
