About the job

Danish Center for Particle Therapy (DCPT) seeks a physicist, hospital physicist, data scientist, software engineer or similar profile for software development within adaptive proton therapy. DCPT is a national center that provides radiotherapy with proton therapy. Our mission is to deliver proton therapy of the highest possible quality to all relevant Danish cancer patients. All of our development tasks are anchored in broad interdisciplinary, local, national and/or international development and research groups.

In this newly created position there is a focus on solving the clinical needs, among other things through research, which will become an important part of your daily life. You will be attached to the group of physicists and dosimetrists whose operating task is to plan individual proton treatments and quality assure treatments and associated equipment. The group develops treatment techniques in close collaboration with doctors, nurses, radiographers, etc., as well as staff in our research department.

DCPT has developed artificial intelligence to improve the image quality of the images we use to adapt patient treatment, as well as for segmentation of medical images. We want to strengthen this effort and target it towards the development of adaptive proton therapy, where the individual adjustment of treatment occurs faster and on a daily basis.

It is essential that you have the following competencies

  • solid experience with machine learning and deep learning applied to image data - preferably 3D medical image processing: segmentation, registration or image-to-image models
  • routine in PyTorch or similar, and experience with training, evaluating and debugging models on real datasets
  • craftsmanship discipline in coding: version control, testing, documentation and code review. You must be able to build something that others than yourself can take over and further develop
  • the ability to work closely with physicists and clinicians, and to immerse yourself in a domain you were not trained in.

In addition, it is advantageous if you have

  • knowledge of medical image processing in practice: DICOM and DICOM-RT, radiotherapy planning, scripting against a planning system
  • experience with deploying models in production: containers, inference servers, versioning of models and data and monitoring
  • server operations and databases
  • knowledge of software development under the EU Medical Device Regulation, including the exemption for self-developed software, as well as quality systems, risk management and validation
  • background as a physicist or experience from radiation therapy.

With employment at DCPT you should be prepared to broaden yourself across several diverse tasks, alternating between development tasks and operational tasks. Your task and project portfolio will evolve over time, and depending on your competencies it will come to include research, development and operations.

Regardless of where the emphasis will lie, you must

  • constructively, efficiently and actively be able to engage in collaborations with researchers and clinicians
  • be able to understand users' and the domain's needs
  • be ambitious and have the desire to complete your work with both practical and academic results
  • be prepared to tackle a wide range of tasks.

It is expected that you, in collaboration with DCPT's other academic staff, actively participate in research and development tasks. You will join a multidisciplinary environment with physicists, doctors, nurses, radiographers and others who also work to develop technology and clinical utilization of proton therapy. If you are a candidate who meets the entry requirements for education as a hospital physicist, the center will offer you the education. If not, we will offer similarly tailored education and training.

For further information about the positions contact hospital physicist, senior lecturer Jesper Kallehauge at email [email protected] or chief physicist Ole Nørrevang at tel. 2117 4193. Note that Jesper Kallehauge will not be available for further information until after October 27.

The position is, as a rule, a full-time position.

As Region Midtjylland continually implements savings and reorganizations, employees in redeployment who apply for the position will have priority.

Region Midtjylland is, pursuant to the EU’s remuneration transparency directive, which took effect on 7 June 2026, obliged to inform you of a starting salary or a salary range for a position before offering employment.
