About the job
Are you pursuing a master's degree in medicine at SDU Campus Esbjerg – and would you like to make a difference for another student?
As a medical student you have already gained a lot of experience in making study, teaching, reading, group work, and exams fit together. Perhaps you have found strategies that make everyday study easier – and perhaps you have experienced how much of a difference it can make to have someone to brainstorm with.
Now you have the opportunity to pass on some of your experiences as a study mentor at Olivia Danmark.
We are looking for medical students at SDU Campus Esbjerg who would like to support a fellow student and at the same time develop competencies within communication, relationship-building, dissemination, and guidance, which you can take with you into your future work and career.
About Olivia Danmark
At Olivia Danmark we provide special educational support (SPS) to students with psychological and/or neurological impairments at a wide range of the country’s higher education institutions.
We emphasize high professional standards, continuous quality assurance, and a personal and dedicated approach that creates security.
Our goal is to create a richer life for more students through support that makes a difference.
In that context we are continually seeking study mentors who wish to contribute to SPS work at the University of Southern Denmark.
Your role as a study mentor
As a study mentor you will be attached to a student who needs support to create structure and good framework around their study routine.
You will not be a teacher or subject expert. Your most important task is to be a stable and supportive sparring partner who can share your own experiences and help the student find strategies that work specifically for them.
The concrete needs and focus areas will be clarified at an initial meeting with you and the student.
Your role may include, among other things, helping the student to
- find good strategies for reading, note-taking, and time management
- create structure and prioritise the curriculum, e.g., with the help of study plans
- handle changes in teaching, projects, and curriculum
- understand and manage the requirements and expectations of the education
- establish contact with teachers, supervisors and fellow students
- establish study groups and engage in group work
- understand and navigate social codes and situations related to group work
- manage challenges around exams and exam registration
- navigate the institution’s internal facilities, including IT and library facilities.
Who are you?
To become a study mentor you must
- be enrolled in the medical study program at SDU Campus Esbjerg
- complete an intro workshop with Olivia Danmark no later than six months after your hire.
We also foresee that you
- are studying the medicine master's program, preferably on the first semester
- have good knowledge of the medical study program and study life at SDU Esbjerg
- want to share your own experiences with a fellow student
- are good at listening, communicating, and conveying in an understandable way
- are structured and good at creating overview
- are patient, welcoming, and curious about other people’s perspectives
- want to develop your own communicative and relational skills.
You do not need to have experience with SPS or knowledge of psychological and/or neurological impairments. The most important thing is that you want to support a fellow student and learn how to best make a difference.
What Olivia Danmark offers
As a study mentor at Olivia Danmark you get
- a meaningful student job where you make a concrete difference for another student
- opportunity to develop your competencies within communication, dissemination, relationship-building, and guidance
- experience meeting people with different needs, which you can carry with you into your medical career
- flexibility in planning your working hours so they fit with your studies
- a varied number of hours distributed over the semester – as a starting point, each student has an earmarked framework of 20 hours per semester
- a contact person at Olivia Danmark and the possibility of ongoing upskilling through supervision and workshops
- salary in accordance with the FOA agreement.
You will be paid for the hours you actually work with the student.
Your support in collaboration with Olivia Danmark
The student you mentor also receives support from an SPS advisor who helps handle cognitive, emotional, and social challenges related to the study.
The SPS advisor will be your and the student’s primary contact during the support program. We therefore do not expect you to have special knowledge about disabilities, but to be curious to learn more.
Is it you?
