About the job

Do you like your workday to start when others finish? At Blomsterhusene, the evening is the time when residents are home from day care and STU – in their own apartments – and where you make a difference with dinner, music, a good story and a secure bedtime.

Perhaps you are trained as a pedagogue, pedagogical assistant, SSH or SSA – or have another pedagogical professional background you would like to use with us.

An evening shift at Blomsterhusene The clock is a little past two, and the shift starts with a cup of coffee and a handover from the day team. Sofie has had a restless day in her day care, and Mette explains what helped: dimmed lights and her favourite music. It is also stated in Sofie’s wellbeing plan, which you went through together at the team meeting.

By around four, the bus arrives, and the house fills up in a few minutes. Jonas greets with a loud, cheerful sound, while Sofie calls from her home. You go to her, sit at eye level and try to understand what she is telling you. Is she hungry, tired – or does she need someone there?

Together with Ali, your colleague, you transfer Peter from his wheelchair to his armchair. You use the ceiling lift, just as the occupational therapist has shown you. It takes a few extra minutes – but it is worth it for your backs and Peter’s sense of security.

At dinnertime you help Jonas eat at his own pace. Later Peter’s sister visits, and you have the conversation inside his home. It is his home, and it is his life you are talking about.

Then it is time for brushing teeth, night clothes and a story at the bedside. Sofie settles down with the music from her wellbeing plan, and the house gradually becomes quiet. Before you go home, you write your notes: what helped Sofie, and what Peter’s sister would like to hear more about. That way the team tomorrow knows exactly where to take over.

The above is a fictional example, but if you can see yourself in it, read on.

Professionalism in the residents’ own home Our 39 residents are adults with severe multiple disabilities. Most communicate without words, everyone uses a wheelchair during the day, and many live here for life. Therefore we work with the understanding that Blomsterhusene is their home – and that they themselves decide as much as possible about their lives.

We work with LA2U – a dialogue and reflection method, where we describe what gives each resident peace and joy through wellbeing plans, total communication and a sensory-stimulating approach, and follow up systematically. You will learn the method with us, and you are welcome to initiate new things.

You become part of a living group with 6–9 fixed colleagues and you will be the point of contact for the residents. Here you have a special responsibility for the things that make life personal: contact with the family, birthdays, Christmas gifts and follow-up on the resident’s goals.

What your future colleagues say ”Blomsterhusene is a lovely homely place to be, with good colleagues. There is room to breathe, and there is flexibility. The residents are nice and wonderful. They require full care for everything, and we have all forms of modern aids.” ( Bettina, pedagogue )

Good to know about everyday life We want you to know what you are saying yes to – even the surprises:

  • There is sound in the houses. Many of our residents communicate with sound – including loud sounds – every day. For us, it is language, not something to be stopped.
  • The work is physical. Care, transfers and wheelchairs are part of everyday life. Physiotherapists and occupational therapists ensure the correct working positions and aids.
  • Evening is your focal point. Most shifts run from around 14:00 to 23:00, and you work every third weekend.
  • Documentation is part of it. This is how we ensure that what works for the individual resident also works in the next shift.

What you can expect from us?

  • A fixed team of pedagogues, SSH, SSA pedagogical assistants and care assistants – with an informal, appreciative tone, where we also talk about the difficult things.
  • Professional development in daily life with an introductory program, LA2U training and theme days in the living groups.
  • Flexibility in working hours – with the possibility of long shifts on weekends and a day shift now and then if you want it.
  • Salary according to collective agreement with allowances for special functions.

About Blomsterhusene Blomsterhusene is a residential service in Gentofte Municipality for adults over 18 with severe multiple disabilities – a 24-hour service under the Housing Act §105 with support under the Social Services Act §85. Here live 39 residents distributed across five living groups with either 6 or 9 residents in bright single-story houses with level access, surrounded by green paths and close to Gentofte Lake. Most residents live here for life, so continuity and secure relationships are central.

We are about 50 staff – social- and health-care assistants, pedagogues, pedagogical assistants, care assistants, house helpers, a health professional coordinator and management – and work closely with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses and relatives. We work from habilitative, relational and appreciative approaches and strengthen professionalism through LA2u, where the resident’s own perspective is central. We believe that a good life is created in community – through time, trust and presence, and we meet each resident as a person with their own potential. Read more about us here.
