About the job
Join the citizen engagement in Technical & Environment
We are looking for 2 new consultants with different profiles to strengthen the citizen-facing involvement.
In Technical and Environment we have a strong focus on engaging citizens in relation to the city's physical development in Aarhus Municipality. The Council adopted a new Aarhus model for citizen involvement last year, and with that the starting signal was given for a new Competence Center for citizen involvement, and now we need two more engagement consultants for the team.
Profile 1 – the evaluative specialist
You can design and conduct both quantitative and qualitative studies – both behind the screen and out in the field. Whether it is surveys, anthropological studies or other data collection, you regard it as a celebration, because you see enormous value in evaluating, but also in analyzing and translating data from both physical and digital involvement into valuable insights.
Profile 2 – the change-making profile
You have strong competencies in change processes. You have an eye for relationships, networks and the human dynamics in processes where e.g. a city area changes over time. You are able to create frameworks where dialogue, trust and learning play a decisive role.
Common for both profiles
Both positions are about planning and carrying out involvement processes and strengthening citizen dialogue in connection with the city's physical development, and the work covers areas such as mobility, urban development, nature, climate as well as municipal and local plans.
The portfolio of tasks is broad and varied. All over Aarhus there is active urban development – from the large construction projects at Aarhus Ø to smaller development projects in the hinterland where citizens, stakeholders and local communities want to contribute their perspectives. One day we generate insights for a new parking policy, the next day we support citizens' ownership of new nature areas or develop involvement processes for the city’s future public spaces. The subjects are different, but our approach is the same under the banner: We strengthen democratic participation in the development of Aarhus .
We are not subject-matter experts on the individual topics – we are experts in involvement. We help the municipality's technical areas translate complex knowledge into meaningful dialogues and ensure that citizens' perspectives become an active part of the decision basis. We place great emphasis on assembling the right team for the specific task. Therefore we do not believe that citizen involvement can be standardized. Each task requires its own method, audience understanding and approach.
You may start your application with a short reflection on what you believe is the most crucial factor for constructive citizen dialogue.
Who you will work with
Competence Center for citizen involvement is a team of 11 people anchored in Civil Society, who work with involvement and development, and where promoting active participation in the city’s development is a hallmark.
As an engagement consultant you have many activities outside the office, and the engagement processes often take place outside normal working hours, when as many citizens as possible have an opportunity to participate. Your work will therefore sometimes lie in the afternoon and evening hours.
Who are you?
Your educational background is not decisive, whereas documented experience in either analysis, evaluation and data or change processes is a prerequisite to apply for one of the positions. In addition, we would like you to be able to document several years of competencies and experience in several of the following areas:
- Involvement of different target groups
- Methods and process design
- Planning and facilitating workshops and processes
- New thinking regarding democratizing processes
- Communication skills both verbally and in writing
- Conveying complex and extensive material in an understandable and relevant way with a focus on the target group.
As a person we expect you to be open, outgoing and to thrive on being on stage – or on the lawn in a local area. You are motivated by challenges and can navigate in conflict-filled spaces with many opposing opinions. You are network-building and see the value in joining strong communities with your colleagues across the organization.
