Chief Consultant – IBD, Medical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Aalborg University Hospital

Leading consultant for chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) Department of Medical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Aalborg University Hospital, seeks a leading consultant with the overarching professional responsibility for the department's IBD area. The position is a permanent full-time position with start 1 December 2026 or as agreed.

About the department The department has four main areas of interest: chronic inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatic diseases, chronic liver disease and short bowel syndrome. We provide highly specialized functions within these areas and collaborate closely with a number of clinical departments on cross-cutting functions.

The department consists of inpatient wards, day care, outpatient clinic, endoscopy unit and research unit. We work in a coordinated manner towards a good, coherent patient pathway and place great emphasis on multidisciplinary collaboration with nursing.

About the IBD area The department's outpatient clinic follows about 3,500 patients with IBD, and the biological treatment is provided in Aalborg. Treatment and follow-up are supported by the regional clinical database GASTROBIO, where patients report patient-reported information (PRO) digitally, and which forms the basis for both quality development and research.

In 2024 all patients with IBD who are not on biologic treatment transitioned to a digitally supported, patient-initiated follow-up model with annual remote monitoring and in-person visits as needed. The experiences are good: disease control is maintained, quality of life is improved, and the majority of patients prefer the new model. The next step is to develop similar needs-based pathways for patients on biologic treatment, and this is where you come in.

The IBD area has an active research environment with PhD students and postdocs and close collaborations with Aalborg University, including the Danish National Research Foundation center PREDICT, as well as national and international partners.

The position and your tasks As the leading consultant you have the overall professional responsibility for the IBD area and participate in the department's medical leadership reporting to the chief physician.

Your tasks will include

• Clinical leadership and development of the IBD area, including outpatient biological treatment
• To lead the transition of biological treatment from fixed controls to needs-based, digitally supported pathways based on PRO, biomarkers and nurse-led functions
• To ensure quality and patient safety through guidelines, standardized treatment pathways and ongoing monitoring of national quality indicators
• Further development of GASTROBIO and digital patient solutions in collaboration with the region's IT function and external suppliers
• Planning and resource management in the IBD area in collaboration with nursing leadership and based on data on activity and capacity
• Anchoring and development of IBD research, including guidance and fundraising
• Teaching and training of doctors, nurses and students as well as clinical work in outpatient clinic and inpatient wards.
• Representation of the department in regional, national and international professional contexts

We expect

• Specialist in internal medicine: gastroenterology and hepatology
• Solid clinical experience with IBD, including advanced medical treatment with biological and targeted synthetic drugs
• Experience leading development and change processes, preferably with digital solutions and new ways to organize patient pathways
• PhD or equivalent research qualifications as well as active research within IBD
• Desire to lead and willingness to develop as a leader
• A data-driven approach to quality development and operations
