About the job

A position as a specialist in pediatrics at the Department of Children and Adolescent Medicine (BUA) in combination with the Department of Brain and Spinal Cord Injury, Bodil Eskensen Centre (BEC) is available for occupancy from 1 January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter. The specialist will be part of the staff of physicians with a special function in the neuro-pediatric team in BUA as well as with the physicians in the neurological team in BEC.

The specialist reports to the Chief Physician in BUA on medical, organizational matters

The applicant must be a specialist in pediatrics. Expert training in neuro-pediatrics or equivalent experience and training in pediatric neurology will be an advantage.

The specialist position supports an exciting collaboration between BUA and BEC with opportunities for further development of the area.

BEC comprises four beds and an outpatient function for children and adolescents, medically served by BUA.

In bed, children with acquired brain or spinal cord injury with a need for highly specialized rehabilitation are admitted. In the outpatient clinic, children and adolescents are seen for assessment of rehabilitation needs after acquired brain injury

The role at BEC is carried out in collaboration with a pediatric neurologist, who also has a shared position between BUA and BEC. The role includes attendance at BEC two days a week with participation in the morning conference, ward rounds on children and adolescents, outpatient activity, teaching and other relevant activities. One day per week a virtual ward round is offered from BUA, evening/night telephone back-up with the on-call BUA, but no possibility for physical attendance.

The specialist is expected, together with the pediatric neurologist, to share responsibility for the pediatric function in BEC.

It is expected that the specialist contributes to ensuring the necessary pediatric expertise at BEC through teaching, adapting procedures and organizing on-call duties at BEC with the on-call team in BUA.

Close collaboration with the neuro-pediatric team in BUA is expected to robustly establish the function, just as close collaboration with the neurological team in BEC is expected.

Department of Children and Adolescents, Rigshospitalet

The pediatric neurological medical team in BUA consists, excluding applicants, of 4 senior physicians and 2 specialists, of whom one is in expert training. The team handles the neurological outpatient clinic and ward rounds on the semi-intensive ward with main focus on neurological issues.

The disease panorama in the department within pediatric neurology includes neuro-pediatrics at a high specialized level and includes epilepsy including epileptic surgical evaluation, neuromuscular disorders, physical and mental handicaps, neuro-neonatal problems, acute neuro-pediatric disorders, etc.

The neuro-pediatric physicians work multidisciplinary in close collaboration with the team’s nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists, neuropsychologists and social workers. There is also close collaboration with the Department of Clinical Genetics, Center for Rare Diseases, Epilepsy Hospital Filadelfia, pediatric orthopedics and the other departments for Children and Adolescents in the region.

There is particular attention to young patients in cooperation with the Youth Medical Knowledge Center with a view to facilitating the transition.

The Department of Children and Adolescents provides highly specialized functions within a wide range of specialties.

Patients are referred from across the country, mainly from the Capital Region and Region Zealand, but also Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

The department has an intake area corresponding to about 125,000 residents, of whom about ¼ are children and adolescents under 18 years old.

The department has about 80 physicians in total, of whom 60 are specialists. There are 3 on-call shifts (pre, day, and after-hours).

The department has substantial research activity. The department is affiliated with 8 professors and 1 clinical lecturer. The department participates in the education of medical students, nursing students and midwifery students as well as in the specialist training in pediatrics.

The department looks forward to moving into the new Mary Elizabeth Hospital – Riget for Children, Youth and Pregnant Women in early 2028 with a strong focus on preparing this in the coming year.

Department of Brain Injury, Bodil Eskesen Centre

The neurological team in BEC currently consists of 12 neurological specialists who, together with our resident physicians, provide medical cover at BEC 24/7 as well as weekly on-site rounds at Rigshospitalet Blegdamsvej.

Our patient group ranges from semi-intensive patients with acquired brain and/or spinal cord injuries to stable patients with rehabilitation needs.

Regarding our pediatric patients there will be a dedicated group of experienced nurses and therapists, and you will also have a permanent senior neurologist as the primary contact person and sparring partner in BEC, who will, as far as possible, take on any on-call rounds on days when a pediatrician is not present.

An agreement has been made for a school arrangement for hospitalized children with the hospital school in Glostrup, and with Tryg Foundation’s family house Glostrup it is possible for patients and families to be close to each other.

The Department of Brain and Spinal Cord Injury currently consists of wards for brain injury and for spinal cord injuries, totaling 65 beds including the 4 pediatric beds, and also has an outpatient clinic for brain and spinal cord injury patients, a spasticity clinic, and a rehabilitation outpatient for adults and youths with acquired brain injury.

The Department of Brain and Spinal Cord Injury was established in BEC in late May 2023. BEC will house the entire highly specialized neurorehabilitation for both brain and spinal cord injuries and also regional neurorehabilitation beds. There are plans for a total of 125 beds in the long term.

Research and innovation are among the department’s top priorities, and in the years to come we expect significant growth requiring active participation from all department physicians. Currently the department includes a chair, two postdocs and a number of PhD students.

The first expansion after establishment in May 23 is the centralization of the Capital Region’s regional neurorehabilitation beds, where the large volume is the most severely affected stroke patients.
