About the job

A position as a specialist physician at the Department of Children and Young People (BUA) in combination with the Department of Brain and Spinal Cord Injury, Bodil Eskesen Centre (BEC) is available for occupancy from 1 January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter. The specialist physician will join the staff of doctors with a special function in the neuropediatric team in BUA as well as with the doctors in the neurological team in BEC.

The specialist physician reports to the chief physician in BUA on medical, organizational matters.

The applicant must be a specialist in pediatrics. Expert training in neuropediatrics or equivalent experience and training in pediatric neurology will be advantageous.

The specialist physician position supports an exciting collaboration between BUA and BEC with opportunities for further development of the area.

BEC contains four beds and an outpatient facility for children and adolescents, medically served by BUA.

In the beds are children with acquired brain or spinal cord injuries who require highly specialized rehabilitation. In the outpatient clinic, children and adolescents are seen for assessment of rehabilitation needs after acquired brain injury

The function at BEC is carried out in collaboration with a neuropediatric specialist, who also has a joint position between BUA and BEC. The function includes two days per week on-site at BEC with participation in the morning conference, ward rounds for children and adolescents, outpatient activity, teaching and other relevant activities. One day per week a virtual ward round from BUA is offered, evening-night telephone sparring with the on-call BUA, but no possibility for physical attendance.

The specialist physician is expected, together with the neuropediatric chief, to share responsibility for the child and adolescent function at BEC.

It is expected that the specialist physician will help ensure the necessary pediatric expertise at BEC through teaching, adjustment of procedures, and organization of on-call coverage at BEC with on-call staff in BUA.

Close collaboration with the neuropediatric team in BUA is expected to robustify the function as best as possible, as well as close collaboration with the neurological team in BEC.

Department of Children and Young People, Rigshospitalet

The pediatric neurological medical team in BUA consists, excluding applicants, of 4 full professors and 2 specialist physicians, of whom one is in expert training. The team is responsible for the neurological outpatient clinic and ward rounds on the semi-intensive ward with main focus on neurological problems.

The disease panorama in the department within pediatric neurology includes highly specialized neuropediatrics and includes epilepsy including epileptic surgery evaluation, neuromuscular disorders, physical and mental handicaps, neuro-neonatal problems, acute neuropediatric disorders, etc.

The neuropediatric doctors work across disciplines in close collaboration with the team’s nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists, neuropsychologists and social workers. There is also close collaboration with the Department of Clinical Genetics, Center for Rare Diseases, Epilepsy Hospital Filadelfia, pediatric orthopedics and the other departments for Children and Young People in the region.

Particular attention is paid to young patients in collaboration with the Youth Medical Knowledge Center to facilitate transition.

Department of Children and Young People provides highly specialized functions within a wide range of disciplines.

Patients are received from across the country, mainly from the Capital Region and Zealand Region, but also Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

The department has a catchment area corresponding to about 125,000 inhabitants, of whom about a quarter are children and adolescents under 18 years.

The department has a total of about 80 doctors, of whom 60 are specialist physicians. There are 3 on-call shifts (pre-, main-, and on-call).

The department has large research activity. Attached to the department are 8 professors and 1 clinical associate professor. The department participates in the education of medical students, nursing students and midwifery students as well as in pediatric specialty training.

The department looks very much forward to moving into the new Mary Elizabeth Hospital – Riget for Children, Youth and Pregnant Women in early 2028 with a strong focus on preparing for this in the coming year.

Department of Brain Injury, Bodil Eskesen Centre

The neurological team in BEC currently consists of 12 neurological specialists who, together with our reserve doctors, provide medical coverage at BEC around the clock and provide weekly on-call visits at Rigshospitalet Blegdamsvej.

Our patient group ranges from semi-intensive patients with acquired brain and/or spinal cord injuries to stable patients with rehabilitation needs.

For our pediatric patients there will be a dedicated group of experienced nurses and therapists, and likewise you will have a fixed senior neurologist as primary contact and sparring partner in BEC, who will, as far as possible, take care of any needs-round on days when a pediatrician is not present.

An agreement has been made for school arrangements for hospitalized children with the hospital school in Glostrup, and with Trygfond’s family house in Glostrup it is possible for patients and families to stay close to each other.

The Department of Brain and Spinal Cord Injury currently consists of wards for brain injury and spinal cord injury, totaling 65 beds including 4 pediatric beds, and also has a clinic for brain and spinal cord injury patients, a spasticity clinic, and a rehabilitation clinic for adults and young people with acquired brain injury.

The Department of Brain and Spinal Cord Injury was established at BEC in late May 2023. BEC will house the entire high-specialized neurorehabilitation for both brain and spinal cord injuries and, in addition, regional neurorehabilitation beds. There are plans for a total of 125 beds in the long term.

Research and innovation are among the department’s top priorities, where we expect significant growth in the coming years, requiring active participation from all department physicians. Currently the department comprises a chair, two postdocs, and a number of PhD students.

The first expansion after establishment in May 23 is the centralization of Region Capital Region’s regional neurorehabilitation beds, with the largest volume being the most severely affected stroke patients.
