About the job

Here you have the opportunity to build broad surgical experience and develop your nursing competencies within a specialty with great variation and high professional complexity. We treat patients with a wide range of diseases in the gastrointestinal tract and handle both acute admissions, planned surgeries and cancer pathways. It gives you the opportunity to develop your nursing in several directions, both within surgical nursing, where treatment options are continually developing, and within palliation, which constitutes an important part of our work.

With us you won't just become familiar with surgical nursing – you develop a strong clinical eye, high professional independence, and the competencies to handle some of the most complex patient pathways. There is a lot to learn here and good opportunities for professional development, whether you are new to the field or already have experience.

A specialty with many opportunities

We work within both upper and lower surgery and receive both acute and planned patients. We treat, among other things, patients with ileus, cancer and hernias, as we have a regional function within complex hernia operations.

As a surgical nurse with us you will have the opportunity to build a solid and broad surgical professionalism. You learn to provide independent nursing for patients with complex and sometimes critical disease courses, where your clinical observations, assessments and actions have great significance for the patient's treatment and further course. The surgical specialty places particular demands on your ability to observe, analyze and respond quickly to changes in the patient's condition.

You therefore develop strong competencies in clinical decision-making, instrumental nursing, and handling of acute and complex postoperative courses.

The special thing about surgical nursing is the great independence and clinical responsibility that comes with it. While doctors handle the operative functions, it is to a large extent the nurse who is close to the patient and follows the development of the patient's condition. You therefore become a central part of the patient's treatment path, where you with your professional skills must be able to identify complications, prevent deterioration and act in a timely manner.

It is a nursing form that develops your clinical eye and your ability to take independent responsibility, and which gives you a strong foundation as a surgical nurse.

A large portion of our patients have cancer and we handle complex patient pathways that extend from diagnostics and surgical treatment to follow-up, recurrence and palliation. Patients can have extensive treatment courses, multiple simultaneous problems and a need for both specialized nursing and close interdisciplinary coordination. Several of our patients also have open contact with the department, which gives us an important role in creating continuity, accessibility and security throughout the disease course.

Palliation is therefore an important part of our nursing. You gain experience with complex symptom relief, support for patients and relatives, and nursing that requires both high professionalism and human insight to create the best possible framework for the patient. It is about alleviating, preserving dignity and ensuring quality of life even when the goal of treatment changes.

At the same time there are good opportunities to develop personally and professionally across the department's functions. In addition to the bed ward we have our surgical clinic and a function as surgical head nurse in Preparation and Recovery, which is part of the recovery department. Here patients are admitted in connection with their operation.

It provides the opportunity to work across functions and gain insight into the entire patient journey, from examination and preparation to the operation, admission and discharge. At the same time it creates a varied workday with different tasks, patient contacts and professional challenges.

You won't be left to yourself

We adapt your introduction to your experience and your individual needs. You will receive a structured introductory program with a mentor and plenty of time to get to know the department, colleagues and the specialty. In the first period you follow your mentor and introductory nurse and are outside the standard, so you get the best conditions to build security and become familiar with your new tasks.

We help each other in daily life and place emphasis on an open and honest tone, where there is room for questions, sparring and professional discussions. We have a strong social community, which means a lot to us, and we make an effort to welcome both new colleagues and students. We believe that a good working environment and a strong collegial community are important prerequisites for high professionalism and good patient care.
