About the job

Do you want to make a difference for people with substance use problems and often complex social and health-related challenges? Become part of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment in Copenhagen, where you have the opportunity to shape the treatment in a strong multidisciplinary community with a focus on professional development.

About the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment

The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment is Denmark's largest center for substance use treatment, distributed across 10 locations around Copenhagen with departments for opioid substitution treatment, alcohol and drug treatment, heroin treatment, day treatment, youth treatment, as well as mobile and outreach substance use treatment.

The medical group consists of two chief physicians and 19 doctors, most of whom are specialists in general medicine. We work in local physician teams in close collaboration with the local management and the responsible medical lead, and hold regular physician meetings in the overall medical group every other week. Substance use treatment is anchored in citizen-facing, multidisciplinary local teams.

The medical team you will join consists of four doctors who provide medical care for about 365 patients distributed on:

  • An offering for substitution treatment at Vigerslev Allé, providing multidisciplinary substance use treatment for opioid-dependent patients
  • A clinic with exclusively health-professional substance use treatment
  • A frontline multidisciplinary team that provides substitution treatment for citizens who cannot attend the established treatment offerings

In addition, U-Turn, the treatment offering for youths aged 14-24, is located door-to-door with Vigerslev Allé, and the doctors have joint sparring meetings and coordinate coverage in connection with holidays and courses.

We anticipate a period of internal experiential- and competence development across the entire center, so that all doctors broaden their competence field within substance use treatment.

You will have professional community with the other doctors in the team and will also be part of the overall medical group across the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. In connection with holidays, illness and courses we collaborate on medical coverage across the entire center.

The medical tasks

The medical treatment is described in the “Danish Health Authority’s Guidelines for doctors treating opioid-dependent patients with substitution medicine, 2017”.

You will closely collaborate with medical colleagues, health professionals and substance use treatment specialists to carry out the medical substance use treatment, including substitution treatment, screening for hepatitis and HIV, assessment of substance-use-related psychiatric and somatic disorders and patient education in overdose management.

As a physician you are expected to participate in competence development of other professional groups, and there is close collaboration with the local management in coordinating the health-professional effort. You will focus on somatic and psychiatric diseases and create contact with the established health system when relevant.

You will engage in broad collaboration with both internal and external actors, including the social home care, street-level initiatives, job centers, Denmark’s prisons, shelters, housing facilities, general practitioners and hospitals, including close collaboration with infectious disease outpatient clinics. There is good local collaboration with Flex General Practice and Flex Clinic at Bispebjerg Hospital regarding somatic issues and collaboration with psychiatry on treatment of patients with dual diagnoses.
