About the job

Are you keen to help build a new guidance function where you can make a concrete difference for people in one of life's most vulnerable situations?

We are seeking an education counselor for 32 hours per week for the remand prison area under the North Jutland Prisons and Supervision. You will be employed at Herning Remand Prison, but will also cover the remand prisons in Nykøbing Mors, Viborg, Holstebro and Ringkøbing.

As an education counselor you will become part of a new professional unit in the remand prisons, where you in close collaboration with the prison schools' teachers, social workers and other staff shall support the inmates' opportunities for education.

Who are we?

The remand prisons are part of Danmarks Fængsler (Denmark's Prisons) and play a central role in the inmates' path forward to either serving their sentence or being released. Here we meet people at a crucial phase of their lives, where there is often a need for quick clarification, realistic perspectives and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

As an education counselor you will become part of a new professional group that will strengthen the educational efforts in the remand prisons. Together with school teachers, social workers, prison officers and management you contribute to creating coherence in the inmate's education path – both during the stay in custody and in the transition to prison or release.

You get a unique opportunity to help develop a new function, where you help shape both tasks, collaboration forms and the future guidance efforts.

About the job

As an education counselor you will have a varied daily routine with both individual guidance conversations, administrative tasks and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Your main tasks will include among other things to

  • conduct individual guidance conversations with inmates about education and employment opportunities
  • motivate inmates to education – also when they are not immediately in the target group for AVU or FVU
  • advise on education opportunities during serving the sentence and help ensure that the inmate is referred to the most relevant offering
  • advise on education opportunities after transfer to prison or upon release
  • conduct urgent guidance conversations, for example at new admissions, transfers or interrupted education programs
  • obtain examination certificates, educational documentation and previous OBU tests and ensure correct journaling
  • record guidance programs and documentation in PUMA
  • keep inmates' education wishes and action plans up to date
  • coordinate waiting lists for classes in close cooperation with the remand prisons' teachers.
  • collaborate with guidance counselors in other prisons and remand prisons to create smooth transitions between institutions

The position involves a considerable amount of administrative work, where structure, documentation and follow-up are an important part of the task.

You will be based across several remand prisons and must therefore thrive in a mobile workday, where planning and flexibility are a natural part of the job. Several of the remand prisons have limited office facilities, so you must be prepared to work from home. It is also a prerequisite for the job that you have a driving license.

Who are you?

We imagine that you

  • have aDiploma in Education, Vocational, Study and Career Guidance or equivalent qualifications. If you do not already have the qualification or equivalent documented qualifications, you must be prepared, as part of your employment, to pursue the diploma program
  • have extensive knowledge of the adult education system
  • have experience with guiding adults with different backgrounds
  • work in a structured way and have a focus on documentation and administrative processes
  • can create trust and motivation in people who are often in vulnerable and unresolved life situations
  • can work independently and at the same time participate in close cross-disciplinary collaboration
  • thrive in a daily routine where plans can change with short notice
  • have good written and oral communication skills
  • are eager to help develop a new function and actively contribute to shaping the future guidance efforts.

Experience from and knowledge of the education opportunities in Denmark's Prisons is an advantage, but not a prerequisite.

We offer

As an employee of Denmark's Prisons you will become part of a workplace with great social significance and many different professional fields.

We offer among other things

  • the opportunity to help establish and develop a new guidance function in the remand prisons
  • a meaningful job where you can make a concrete difference for people in a crucial phase of their lives
  • a strong cross-disciplinary collaboration with teachers, social workers, prison guards and management
  • a varied daily life with a high degree of independence
  • a thorough introduction and training in the framework and security procedures of Denmark's Prisons
  • professional sparring and the opportunity to develop the guidance effort together with engaged colleagues.

Salary and terms of employment

Employment and remuneration are in accordance with the collective agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Teachers’ Central Organisation (LC) and CO10 as well as the workplace agreement for guidance counselors at Studievalg Denmark and the Prison Service institutions and any local agreements entered into there.
