About the job

Do you want to lead an operations unit that every day makes a concrete difference for Copenhagen residents and the city's guests? And are you motivated by creating direction, a sense of community, and good conditions for employees whose work is important for the city’s life to unfold?

Copenhagen's public toilets are an important part of a vibrant and diverse city. They make it possible for more people to use the city’s spaces and stay outdoors – regardless of age, needs, and life situation. We are seeking a unit manager who, together with the staff, will ensure well-functioning toilets and contribute to safe and inviting public spaces.

About the job and your responsibilities

As the unit manager for Toilets, you will have overall management responsibility for 65 permanent employees and about 15 seasonal staff who operate the city’s toilets, with supervision and the unmanned toilets. The staff are organized under FOA for toilets with supervision and 3F for the unmanned toilets. You report to the Area Manager for City Operations and are supported by two operations coordinators who assist with planning and daily task execution.

You will have a position close to both the employees and the city we serve. The task is to ensure stable operations with high quality while also developing the unit so that we use our resources well and meet citizens’ needs. You set a clear direction and translate goals and priorities into an everyday where the staff know their tasks and feel that their efforts make a difference.

Your central tasks will be to

  • ensure smooth daily operations with focus on cleaning, service, and users’ experience of the toilets
  • create coherence and a sense of community in a unit where staff work at different locations and times
  • prioritize tasks and resources and follow up on quality, economy, and results
  • support wellbeing, a good working environment, and employees’ professional development
  • develop task handling together with staff and in close collaboration with colleagues across the organization

The daily work requires attention to both planned operations and situations that call for quick action. You must be able to maintain the direction and at the same time adapt efforts to city life and changing needs.

You will also participate in weekend shifts across Bynatur and Cleaning in 5-7 weekends per year as the responsible manager for the city’s operations.

About you

We are looking for a leader who wants to spearhead a large operations unit and who sees value in employees’ daily encounters with the city and its users. You are visible, accessible, and clear in your leadership and you build trust through dialogue, clear expectations, and follow-up.

We emphasize that you

  • have leadership experience, preferably from an operations organization with employees distributed across several workplaces
  • can create calm and direction and prioritize in a daily life with changing needs
  • have an eye for the connection between good service, professional quality, and responsible use of resources
  • are interested in employees’ everyday lives and incorporate their experiences in developing task handling
  • communicate clearly and respectfully and collaborate well with different professional areas
  • understand working in a politically governed organization

Your educational background is not decisive. What matters is your leadership skills and your ability to achieve results together with others.

About us

You will become part of the management group in City Operations, where we jointly share responsibility for ensuring that, among other things, the city’s green spaces, streets, and toilets function in daily life and provide space for city life. We work for coherent operations with high quality and citizens’ needs as the starting point. In the management group, we prioritize shared direction, professional sparring, and close collaboration across the units.

You will have responsibility and room for action within your own unit, and you will also be part of a binding management community where we help each other, develop solutions together, and take responsibility for the whole.

City Operations is part of the Deputy Mayor’s area, City Nature and Cleaning. Our strategy towards 2030 focuses on “Citizens First”, “Green Pioneers”, “Climate Action in Daily Life”, “The Common We”, and “Competences in Play”. As a unit manager, you will actively help translate the strategy into concrete improvements in daily life.

The Climate, Environment and Technical Administration has a leadership framework that forms the basis for expectations of the role as a leader in the administration. The leadership framework is our shared direction for good leadership. For each leadership level there are specific roles and tasks. The framework is based on our three norms:

  • We do it properly
  • We do it together
  • We do it for Copenhagen
