About the job

We are seeking a language and reading consultant with an eye for the connection between general development in the reading area and the specifically reading-supportive instruction for the most challenged readers in primary school.

We are looking for you in particular, who is focused on the link between language and reading, and who can navigate both at the strategic school development level and in the pedagogical space together with the professional staff at the schools.

In Faaborg-Midtfyn Municipality we see the importance of creating participation opportunities for all children in primary education. This also applies to children who struggle with their language and reading. We are now three years into the “Program for Community-Building Learning Environments”, where the focus across the administration and public schools is on building participation capacity, so that the local public school becomes the framework for the schooling of as many children and young people as possible.

The position as language and reading consultant rests on two legs

  • The language and reading consultant shall thus help revise and implement the municipal reading strategy as well as monitor and follow the professional capacity building in the language- and reading area.
  • Support primary schools in building capacity in relation to language and reading in general and in relation to helping students with major language and reading difficulties.

You must thus move from strategy to action and create meaningful connections between both levels.

If you - like us - think the above is important and exciting, we would very much like to hear from you!

About us

Prevention and Health is a cross-disciplinary team consisting of PPR (Educational Psychology Service), Health Nurse, Dental Service, Youth Guidance, and SSP.

The professionalism and well-being is high. We have a trust-based and informal approach to one another and always a sharp focus on the task.

In Prevention and Health we, together with the Children and Family area, are focused on early and cross-professional interventions for the benefit of children, young people and their families, which is why our frontline staff consisting of social worker, pedagogical psychological consultant, and health nurse are firmly anchored in the Preventive team in all kindergartens and schools.

We are physically located in Gislev together with the shared secretariat and the total social area.

We also have an inviting Prevention House available in Vester Hæsinge for carrying out preventive activities, including talk and group sessions.

The position

As mentioned, the position rests on two legs. In Faaborg-Midtfyn Municipality the overarching strategic area in the school and day-care field is “Community-Building Learning Environments”. The goal is to increase participation capacity in our day care and our public schools, so that even more children and young people thrive and develop in their local day-care or school environment.

With the position we want to both strengthen the general focus on language and reading and support locally anchored capacity building – from strategy to practice.

Examples of tasks

  • Formulation and implementation of reading strategy in close cooperation with school consultants in our secretariat and reading advisors in the municipality, including:
  • Description of interventions for the 10% academically weakest performing students in Danish, based on the thinking in Community-Building Learning Environments linked to the general capacity-building that must take place in the schools
  • Description of municipal testing practices
  • Description of the role and function of reading advisors, so that the strategy can be used to support a common municipal practice and onboarding of new employees
  • Ongoing follow-up at the school level together with the school leaderships focusing on reading interventions for all, including:
  • The local capacity building
  • Data on reading development
  • Results from language assessments and dyslexia risk tests
  • Drive the municipal reading advisor network
  • Co-teaching courses where teaching teams are supported in implementing writing and reading technology and linguistic scaffolding in teaching in classes with several dyslexic students and possibly also students with DLD
  • Support schools in initiating reinforced courses for students who need reading compensatory tools so they increase their participation in general education
  • Co-teaching courses focusing on parental involvement, so parents are empowered to support their children in relation to language and reading
  • Presentations for subject professionals on general language and reading support in all subjects

Teamed-wise the position is particularly linked to our language team in PPR, which consists of our speech-hearing consultants, multilingual consultant and language consultant - and with close ties to our pedagogical inclusion team, pedagogical psychological consultants and school consultants in our Community Secretariat. There is naturally collaboration with professionals at the schools, reading advisors and the local school leadership.

About you

We are looking for a language and reading consultant with in-depth professional insight in the language and reading area. You simultaneously have a strategic view and can work very practically – in practice.

You are passionate about strengthening participation capacity in the primary school area, and you thus have a sharp view of participation didactics and knowledge about children's prerequisites for learning.

We also seek a colleague who is professionally well-founded in systemic theory, and who can challenge existing positions in a factual, positive and constructive spirit. In addition you have knowledge of and experience with different pedagogical and didactic approaches to developing participation-focused practice.

You thrive in development processes where traces are laid while we are on the way, and you are not afraid to venture into unknown territory. You acknowledge the importance of interprofessional efforts – and you are:

  • Able to shift positions to function as a sparring partner, supervisor, facilitator and teacher.
  • Able to motivate and spur your collaborators in working with community-building didactics
  • Interested in supporting all children and young people's participation opportunities – and you can operate both through professional colleagues and in direct contact with children, young people and their parents

As a person you are flexible and informal. You are aware of the importance of communication and easily collaborate. You are humble about the complexity of the tasks, but also have the courage to stand firm – even when it is difficult.

Education and professional background

We imagine that you are a teacher or audiologist-speech-language pathologist supplemented with relevant further/continuing education within the language- and reading-related field. In addition we imagine that candidates have worked in pedagogical practice and experiences from process management, sparring and advisory processes.
