About the job

Do you want to work in depth with digital cultural heritage and gain experience with original manuscripts from H.C. Andersen while developing your analytical and methodological skills?

At The Royal Library we are seeking an intern for a larger digitization and dissemination project, where you will have the opportunity to work with the author's manuscripts, letters and personal papers and contribute to making them accessible for both researchers and the public.

The project includes digitization and dissemination of the entire H.C. Andersen collections at The Royal Library, which are part of UNESCO's Memory of the World.

About the internship program

As an intern you will be part of the project team and gain insight into the entire digitization process from physical archive material to digital dissemination.

The internship gives you the opportunity to

  • Gain practical experience with transcription of historical manuscripts in Transkribus
  • Work on quality assurance and method development in connection with AI-based handwriting recognition
  • Work analytically and methodically with historical documents
  • Convey historical sources to both digital and academic audiences
  • Collaborate with universities and develop teaching and events about the H.C. Andersen material
  • Link internship tasks to your studies

Your tasks

Your internship tasks provide broad insight into the work with historical manuscripts and digital dissemination.

You will among other things be able to work with

  • Contribute to method development and verify AI-generated transcriptions of handwritten sources from H.C. Andersen
  • Contextualization and mapping of persons and places in selected sources
  • Documentation of workflows in the digitization and transcription process
  • Historical research and archival investigations
  • Development of dissemination content based on historical sources (web, social media and teaching programs for universities)

There will be an opportunity to gain insight into the work of other departments as part of the H.C. Andersen project (conservation, retro-digitization and events).

About the department

You will be part of the Department of Historical Collections and Research, which manages some of the most important parts of Danish and European cultural heritage, including the Manuscripts Collection, Book History Collections, Folklore Collection, Music and Theatre Collection, and Map and Image Collection.

The department works with collecting, making accessible, researching and disseminating unique collections and plays a central role in making cultural heritage accessible to both researchers and the public.
