About the job

We are seeking a reserve doctor in an introductory position as of February 1, 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.

As an introductory doctor you will participate in the work in the Acute Clinic, carry out ward rounds in the Observation Ward and on the pulmonary, endocrinology, geriatrics and cardiology wards, and possibly participate in functions in the pulmonary medicine and endocrinology outpatient clinics. In addition, you will function as team leader for the hospital's code blue (cardiac arrest) management and have responsibility for hospital flow from 20:00 to 08:00. A large part of your working time will be in the Acute Clinic.

About the hospital

The Department of Lung, Hormone and Metabolic Diseases and the Acute Clinic (ALHS) is a broad medical department housing a wide internal medicine function. ALHS has about 85 beds and our patient intake is about 40-45 per day, of which more than 95% are acute admissions. As a younger doctor you can expect to be responsible for ward rounds on all of the bedded wards listed below. We hold joint conferences and you will therefore meet many colleagues in the conference room “Amager Strand,” often supplemented with medical students or other guests.

Cardiology Ward (C) and Cardiology Outpatient Clinic

The department has a special function for patients with heart disease and receives both patients with acute cardiology problems and patients for evaluation of arrhythmias and heart failure. In immediate proximity to the bed ward, echocardiography (transthoracic and transesophageal) is performed.

Pulmonary Medicine Ward (L) and Pulmonary Outpatient Clinic

The department primarily receives patients with lung diseases, COPD and asthma and endocrine disorders as well as unselected internal medicine patients. NIV treatment is offered on the ward. The ward has specially trained respiratory nurses with outreach function and there are COPD education sessions (COPD school). As a natural consequence, the pulmonary outpatient clinic is incorporated into the ward.

Geriatric Ward G

Here patients with geriatric issues are admitted, including dizziness, dementia, delirium, falls at home, polypharmacy, etc.

OA (Observational Ward)

Here internal medicine patients are admitted when the diagnosis is uncertain or with expected short admission following initial assessment in the acute reception.

Endocrinology Outpatient Clinic

Performs diagnosis and treatment of patients with endocrine disorders. The most common conditions are diabetes, thyroid diseases, pituitary and adrenal disorders as well as osteoporosis.

Acute Reception/ Acute Observational Ward (OA)

In the acute reception, patients referred from primary care and the 1813 emergency number are assessed and triaged. About 50% of patients are fully evaluated and treated in the acute reception and discharged to their own general practitioner or to an outpatient clinic. The remaining half are admitted to one of the hospital's departments.

WORKING RESPONSIBILITIES

Ward rounds

You will always perform ward rounds together with a senior doctor, and there is always an opportunity to discuss issues as they arise. Ward rounds typically start in most departments with a whiteboard meeting at 08:45. Interdisciplinary plans for investigation, treatment and discharge are developed here.

On-call work

There are 3 doctors (on-call for night duty (FV) + mid-shift (MV) and auxiliary on-call (HJ)) on duty around the clock. At the start you will work as an on-call or auxiliary on-call. In time you will move up to the mid-shift team. All on-call doctors participate in assessment and treatment of patients in the acute reception, and also supervise acute problems arising in the ward after 15:30.

EDUCATION

Students

The department provides teaching for medical students. All doctors in the department contribute to clinical teaching, and you will often have a medical student with you in the acute area and on ward rounds. It is expected that you contribute to theoretical and bedside teaching of students.

Theoretical teaching

All doctors participate in the morning conference on weekdays from 08:15 to 08:30. The night team presents one or more cases from the night shift each morning. Thereafter there is morning teaching (patient cases, journal club, teaching in acute conditions and internal medicine diseases). It is attempted that all YLs present patient cases as well as theoretical presentations during their stay.

Work organization The work is organized in 8-shift duty in 2-hour blocks . Reservists are in a common night duty around the clock, and you always have the opportunity for sparring with colleagues.

Introductory doctors participate in the mid-shift team together with trainees, while KBU doctors staff the on-call shift.

There is on-site back-up from 08–20 and subsequently the possibility of conference with a senior doctor by telephone .

We offer

  • A strong collegial and professional environment where teaching and supervision are highly prioritized
  • A dynamic work environment with focus on good patient journeys and development for the individual
  • A broad insight into internal medicine – relevant whether you are already decided on your specialty or seeking clarification
  • An department where your competencies are actively used, and where you get the opportunity to grow as a clinician and as a person

We look forward to hearing from you – and to supporting you in developing all 7 physician roles in a strong and engaged educational environment.
