About the job

University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Natural and Biochemical Sciences, Department of Food Science (FOOD), seeks 2 lab technician interns employed for 11 months from 1 February 2027. The position is full-time.

You will be offered training in an exciting, creative and attractive research and teaching environment within the field of food science. The Department of Food Science is centrally located at Frederiksberg (Copenhagen) in a newer building with good laboratory facilities.

The training will take place in an international research and teaching environment, where the interns will be attached to different research projects. The working language will alternate between Danish and English. The training aims to ensure that the interns build their own safety and independence in laboratory work.

The internship positions are located at the Section for Food Microbiology, Intestinal Health and Fermentation, which conducts research within food fermentation and functionality of starter cultures, preservation and spoilage of foods including biocontrol, microbial food safety and hygiene, gut flora and probiotics in humans and animals, as well as microbiological quality assurance.

The research includes basic and applied research from the molecular level, across single cells and complex microbial communities to the operational food production level. We study foodborne bacteria, yeasts, molds and phages, as well as their interaction with foods, processes, equipment surfaces and gastrointestinal environments.

The interns will participate in the department’s various research projects and also assist in conducting laboratory courses for students. In addition, the interns will participate in general laboratory work including preparation of reagents and special buffers, titration, pH measurements, extraction, sample treatment, protocol writing, documentation, data processing and laboratory safety.

The lab technician interns will be attached to fixed technicians in the group and possible tasks are described in detail below:

The interns will be attached to research projects concerning microbial ecology in complex environments (foods, fermentation processes and the gastrointestinal tract).

The projects include one or more aspects relevant to bacteriophages (bacterial viruses), bacteriophage resistance, bacteriocins (antimicrobial peptides), molecular typing (identification and taxonomy of lactic acid bacteria and yeasts as well as associated flora), pathogens/microbial food safety, culture-independent characterization of complex microbial environments using high-throughput sequencing and gene expression (including stress and virulence genes).

Through the work, the intern will gain skills in both classical microbiological techniques and modern molecular biological methods. There will be a strong emphasis on the intern’s ability to independently plan and organize their work and to assess their own results and communicate them in a usable form. The intern will be daily attached to the department’s other laboratory technician group.

We thus offer a thorough, versatile and exciting training that ensures the intern a high degree of independent competence. Collaboration, helpfulness and good humor are a clear advantage.

The positions are filled in accordance with the applicable joint agreement between the Ministry of Finance and Public Employees – The State Sector (OAO) as well as the collective agreement for laboratory technicians entered into between the Ministry of Finance and HK/STAT.
