About the job

Do you have solid experience as a doctor and an interest in working with patients with substance use problems and often social vulnerability?

About the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment in Copenhagen

Substance Abuse Treatment Copenhagen is Denmark's largest substance abuse treatment center spread across 10 sites around Copenhagen with departments for opioid substitution treatment, alcohol and drug treatment, heroin treatment, day treatment, adolescent treatment, as well as outreach and forward-leaning substance abuse treatment in addition to services for pregnant women and families.

The medical group consists of two senior consultants and 19 doctors, most of whom are specialists in general medicine. We work in local teams and hold regular medical meetings in the overall medical group every two weeks.

The Medical Team North, which you will join, handles medical treatment for about 350 patients distributed across

  • a substitution unit on Ørnevej, providing multidisciplinary substance abuse treatment for opioid-dependent patients
  • a specialist unit for physician-prescribed heroin treatment, Valmuen on Tomsgårdsvej
  • a specialist unit on Tomsgårdsvej with a social-pedagogical drop-in function and substance abuse treatment for a group of citizens with a high degree of comorbidity

You will have professional fellowship with the other doctors in the team and will furthermore be part of the overall medical group in Substance Abuse Treatment Copenhagen. In connection with holidays, illness and courses we collaborate on medical coverage across the entire Center for Substance Abuse Treatment.

The medical tasks

The medical treatment is described in the Health Authority's Guideline to doctors treating opioid-dependent patients with substitution medication: legal requirements and recommendations | Health Authority

You will in close collaboration with medical colleagues, health personnel and substance abuse workers undertake the medical substance abuse treatment, including substitution treatment, screening for hepatitis and HIV, evaluation of substance-related psychiatric and somatic disorders, and teaching patients in overdose treatment.

As a doctor you are expected to contribute to the professional development of other professional groups, and there is close cooperation with the local management in coordinating the health care efforts. You will focus on somatic and psychiatric diseases and establish contact with the established health care system when relevant.

You will enter into broad collaboration with both internal and external actors, including social home care, street-level interventions, job centers, Denmark's prisons, shelters, housing facilities, homeless and vulnerable units, general practitioners and hospitals, including close cooperation with infectious disease outpatient clinics. There is good local cooperation with Flex General Practice and Flex Clinic at Bispebjerg Hospital regarding somatic issues and cooperation with psychiatry on treatment of patients with dual diagnosis.
