About the job

Children's Librarian / Children's Literature Facilitator for KøgeBibliotekerne 34 hours/week

Maternity cover from 1 December 2026 to August 2027 with possibility of extension Who are you? It is a requirement that you are professionally grounded in children's literature and children's culture. For you, the 6-12/14-year-olds are the most fun target group to work with. You thrive as part of a group of colleagues and are able to bring yourself into play in the children's library in Køge. You should have the desire and ability to engage in activities that communicate literature, a love of reading and reading culture to the target group.

You are skilled at communicating your knowledge and curiosity to both children and their guardians. You are concerned with what children and young people can teach you, and your approach to them is equal and credible. If you have a technological curiosity that can be brought into play in relation to our Folkelab and in encounters with the children, this is an advantage. Include concrete examples in your application of how you do this.

Personally, one of your strengths is that you are outgoing and good at building relationships – both with children and adults, whether they are parents, teachers, pedagogues, colleagues or external partners.

When you walk down the street, you are completely comfortable being approached by excited children's voices who recognize you from the library. You should enjoy being recognized – also on your way to and from work.

You have a fundamentally positive view on life, where you see possibilities rather than limitations. You are good at collaborating, generating ideas and seizing and developing others' ideas.

What will you do with us?

The first months are important for you to “land with us.” You will be an active part of the well-functioning collaboration with the other five children's librarians. You will be assigned a buddy who helps you find your way and make the first connections.

In addition, you will receive a thorough introduction to what we mean by relational hospitality, and how we work with it. You will have shifts with an accompanying person so you feel secure when you have to stand alone.

The daily life in Køge consists of a variety of operational tasks: e.g., weekly library shifts serving both children and adults, tidying up loans, restocking exhibitions and slanted shelves in the bookcases, locating reserved materials and packing book boxes for the day care centers. Tasks that must be handled – also by you.

Within the first six months you will have contributed to carrying out activities for schools and day care centers. Children's literature is our foundation in our activities. And in relation to the schools we also focus on experiential learning.

We already have a program: Offers to schools | KøgeLibraries , for the 2026/27 school year. It will primarily be you and Karin who welcome schools, assisted by your other colleagues in the children's library area. It is a new program, so it is important that you have an eye for what works and where we should adjust, both for the next time and for the upcoming school year program.

During the first six months you will also have organized various events and activities – both in the library and at other places where you have had the library “under your arm.” Some activities take place outside the staffed hours – e.g., in the morning at school, late in the afternoon, early in the evening or on Saturdays.

When you move on...

... you will leave KøgeLibraries with a solid professional ballast and a good network of colleagues who cheer you on in your job search.

You have become recognized on streets and avenues as the “children's librarian from Køge Library.” Together with your closest colleagues – you have tested and adjusted the new formats in school outreach. You are sharp on literature dissemination at a child-friendly level and you have personally experienced the difference you can make in the lives of children and adults with a book or more in hand.

Who are we?

At KøgeLibraries we are 42 people with different professional backgrounds and employment fractions. The management consists of Library Chief Henriette, Deputy Head Gitte and Department Head Lisbeth.

What we have in common at KøgeLibraries is that we work relationally with our hospitality – whether we disseminate in library lending, on Facebook, at a school or in the citizens’ homes with The Library Comes . This means that we are proactive and have the initiative to engage in conversations with citizens. We are organized across houses and educational backgrounds into task- and operations communities.

For example, we have the following task communities: Statistics and dissemination, Folkelab 2.0, Material purchasing and care. This also means that you can be in one or more task- or operations communities that have a leader, while your staff management is handled by another.

We are a World Goals-certified library. This means that we have a number of special obligations to help ourselves and the world move closer to the Sustainable Development Goals. We are focused on what we can do, together with citizens, to achieve them.

As an organization, we are characterized by the fact that a lot is possible – and that we can lift even more together, both internally and with external partners and volunteers. It is a condition that you can see yourself in this community. And we expect you to address this in your application.

We have three libraries with service, located in Køge, Herfølge and Borup. You can see all our service locations here Libraries | KøgeLibraries
