About the job
Teacher for 1-year substitute in mathematics at Bakkeskolen
Do you want to help create meaningful mathematics education that makes a difference?
At Bakkeskolen we believe that every child can develop when they are met with expectations, strong relationships and teaching that takes their different prerequisites and needs as a starting point.
We are seeking an engaged teacher for a 1-year substitute, where mathematics is a central part of the task.
Bakkeskolen
Bakkeskolen is a special school for children with socio-emotional challenges, located at Gl. Sognevej 8 in Sejet. We also have a smaller department on Kildegade in Horsens, which is an integrated part of our overall offering.
Bakkeskolen is part of Horsens Ungdomsskole, and as an employee you will therefore be part of a large organization with many different professional areas, offerings and opportunities. It provides access to exciting collaborations across and the possibility to bring your professional knowledge into play in new contexts. We have a strong focus on learning from each other and creating coherence between our many school offerings, leisure activities and other communities around children and young people.
The school days are carried by skilled and engaged staff who, together, create the framework for the children's well-being, development and participation. We emphasize being clear adults with warmth who create security and predictability while meeting the children with respect, presence and attention to each child's perspective. There is room to think big, both personally and academically, and space for creative and pedagogical ideas, which are developed to benefit the children.
Our pedagogical starting point
Our pedagogical approach is based on mentalization, low arousal and Nussa. We work purposefully to create safe, predictable and meaningful learning environments where children can regulate themselves, enter into relationships and feel understood. We have a close collaboration with the school’s psychologists, and there is the possibility of ongoing supervision and professional sparring, which supports employees' reflection and development in practice.
Nature and outdoor life are an important part of the school’s pedagogical profile. We actively use the surroundings for movement, calm, sensation and learning and place emphasis on an active and motivating teaching where the pupils experience mastery, joy and a desire to learn.
Music and community also play a big role in daily life. Many of our students play instruments, and we regularly gather for morning singing, concerts and other events, where parents are also invited. This creates closeness, pride and strong relationships and provides space for both the individual child's voice and the collective “we.”
You will become part of a strong community
At Bakkeskolen you are never alone.
You will become part of a school where professionalism, community and job satisfaction go hand in hand. We are close to each other in daily life, share ideas, help each other and actively use each other’s professional knowledge. There is room to ask questions, wonder, brainstorm and try something new, and we stand together when something is difficult. We always work in teams consisting of 3-5 teachers and pedagogues.
We prioritize employees’ professional development and offer good opportunities for competency development. In the current school year we have, for example, presentations from, among others, Dorthe Birkemose and Bo Hejlskov on the program for our joint professional development together with the Youth School. You will have the opportunity to develop your practice together with skilled colleagues and be part of a professional community where we learn from each other.
Mathematics that can be felt..
We are looking for a teacher who is passionate about mathematics and who wants to think about subject, teaching and participation in new ways.
At Bakkeskolen we work with creative, investigative and varied mathematics teaching, where pupils do not only learn at the desk. We believe that mathematical concepts and connections can be understood in several ways; through the body, concrete materials, movement, play, dialogue and practical activities.
For us, it is not about making mathematics less academic – quite the opposite. We want to create teaching with clear academic goals, where students have several paths into the subject and the opportunity to experience mathematics as something meaningful, something that can be investigated and used to understand the world around them.
You should therefore be willing to experiment with the forms of teaching and be curious about how didactic approaches can create more opportunities for participation for students with different prerequisites. You do not need to have all the answers in advance – but you must be willing to explore them together with us.
We would love to welcome a new colleague as
- passionate about mathematics and able to make the subject come alive, relevant and meaningful
- willing to work creatively, investigative and experimental with mathematics
- see the potential in bodily, practical and experiential learning
- be able to create teaching with multiple pathways into the subject and different opportunities for participation
- meet the students with warmth, clarity and respect and be able to create a safe and predictable framework
- be curious about what lies behind students' behavior and view behavior as communication
- have positive and realistic expectations for the students and an eye for their resources and development opportunities
- thrive in a close and committed team collaboration and actively contribute to shared reflection and development of practice
- be keen to further develop daily practice in close professional community together with us
Experience from the special needs area is an advantage, but not a requirement. The most important for us is that you have a desire for the target group, are curious about your own practice and have the courage to help create the framework that makes it possible for more students to experience belonging, succeeding and developing.

If you can see yourself in our way of working, we look forward to hearing from you.
