PhD student (physician) sought for a fully funded PhD program in the treatment of type 2 diabetes at Steno Diabetes Center Nordjylland

A 3-year PhD position at Steno Diabetes Center Nordjylland (SDCN) as part of the EU project Impact-Med.

About the position

We are seeking an ambitious and engaged PhD student for a 3-year research program that combines clinical research, MR scans, high-tech technologies to evaluate muscle and nerve function and innovative blood tests in diabetes treatment. The position is fully funded and affiliated with the EU project Impact-Med.

In the PhD project the candidate will

• Work on clinical research in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
• Join a strong national and international research environment.

The PhD program starts on 1 January 2027 .

About the Impact-Med research project

The project is a large EU/IHI project focused on integrated cardiometabolic care. As part of this project you will become part of Use Case (UC) 4, which deals with personalised care for type 2 diabetes through:

• MR scans aimed at identifying early organ damage (heart function, liver fat and inflammation and kidney perfusion).
• Evaluation of optimized treatment and the significance of weight loss for muscle and nerve fiber function.
• Development of new innovative blood test panels to predict risk of organ damage.
• Optimization of medical treatment based on points 1 and 2, since this is a drug trial a medical license is required.

We are looking for a candidate who

• Has a degree in medicine. Experience with internal medicine is preferred, e.g. a previous introductory position.
• Is independent, organized and has good collaboration skills.
• Will include duties partly at the Diabeteshuset.

About Steno Diabetes Center Nordjylland

SDCN has existed since 1 January 2018 based on a grant from Novo Nordisk Fonden. SDCN is part of a national network of diabetes centers in the regions of Denmark and in the Faroe Islands and Greenland. The centers work to ensure that Danes with diabetes have a better and longer life with fewer complications and increased quality of life. SDCN is established as an independent center with a board, its own management and its own budget. The center is organisationally, operationally and physically located at Aalborg University Hospital.
