About the job

An exciting position as Specialist in Anesthesia and Intensive Care at Aalborg University Hospital is now available for occupancy from 1 December 2026 or by agreement.

The position covers both anesthesia and intensive care for orthopedic, ENT, neuro surgical patients, as well as radiological neurointervention and trauma reception.

The specialty and the department

Anesthesia and Intensive Care constitute a unified department covering all aspects of anesthesia and intensive medicine, prehospital acute medical transport and pain management at the facilities in Aalborg, Hobro, Thisted and Farsø. The department consists of about 70 specialists and 24 physicians under the main training in anesthesiology. With 4 intensive care units, 27 beds and 2400 annual admissions, as well as about 40,000 anesthetics annually, Anesthesia and Intensive Care is a central part of Aalborg University Hospital.

The medical leadership is headed by 1 Chief Physician and 6 Senior Consultants with responsibility for different professional and functional areas. There is a focus on clear directive leadership with transparency, involvement, engagement, interaction and dialogue. We are passionate about joint solutions, and success is when we succeed together.

The department also has a strong focus on professional development, research and education. There is attached a clinical professorship at the chair in anesthesiology and 3 clinical lectorates. The Research Unit for Anesthesia and Intensive Care, led by the professor, delivers cutting-edge clinical research at an international level, and there are attached 4 specialists in part-time postdoc positions.

Anesthesia and Intensive Care also has teaching and education obligations, including physicians in specialty training, medical students and other professional groups. The involvement related to the residency program is coordinated by 2 educationally responsible senior physicians.

Anesthesia and Intensive Care also contribute to the Prehospital Service in the operation of emergency medical cars in the North Jutland Region.

Anesthesia provides clinical anesthesia for all forms of neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, maxillofacial and ENT surgery. The surgery includes highly specialized procedures across all specialties and neurointervention.

Trauma reception accepts patients from across the region, with the possibility of assistance from all specialties.

Intensive medical therapy is provided in a specialized neuro- and trauma-intensive care unit. The unit uses highly specialized neuromonitoring equipment and has close collaboration with the neurosurgical department. In addition, intensive treatment is provided for other specialties, with a focus on neuro/ortho/ENT‑patients. The unit is part of a combined intensive care area, with a total of 4 units.

The department supports satellite functions in radiological settings with anesthesiological assistance for MR and CT scans, as well as neuroradiological intervention.
