About the job

Do you want to work with Denmark's largest traffic signal environment and help develop the management of traffic in Copenhagen?

We are looking for a traffic management expert who wants to create better flow for all city road users and contribute to the professional and technical development of the city's traffic signals and ITS solutions.

In the Traffic Department we are responsible for the operation and development of Copenhagen's approximately 425 traffic signal installations and other intelligent transport systems (ITS), traffic counts and the dissemination of traffic information.

About the job

As a traffic management expert you will be part of the work to optimize the city's traffic signals and ITS equipment. You will work on adapting and improving the settings of traffic signal installations to create better flow in the city. In this context you will help create the necessary overview that ensures an appropriate synchronization of the city's intersections. Green times must be allocated, shifted and synchronized to create good conditions at the individual intersections and green waves across.

You will need to ensure that the existing installations function as intended and identify and implement improvements.

Besides the strategic work you will also work hands-on with signal programming. You will, among other things, create and adapt signal programs in adaptation and programming tools, adjust settings in web interfaces and follow up on changes in the monitoring systems. The overarching goal is to ensure good service and mobility for the city's road users in accordance with the political priorities.

Your tasks will include

  • contribute to developing strategies for optimizing the city's traffic signal installations
  • contribute to planning and design of signal programs and their settings
  • create, program and adapt the signal programs in the signal installations themselves
  • implement and maintain timing settings in the traffic signal installations
  • monitor traffic signal installations and ITS both online and in the field to ensure that mobility is maintained or improved in the city
  • collaborate with colleagues and external partners on the development of the city's infrastructure
  • contribute to answering citizen and political inquiries about traffic signals and ITS
  • help keep track of signal documentation

You will work closely with colleagues in the Climate, Technical and Environmental Administration as well as with, among others, signal suppliers, the Danish Road Directorate, Movia and the police.

As part of the team you also participate in a shift system of about three hours per week.

Technical savvy

You do not need to be a programmer to thrive in the job. But you must be curious about how the systems work, and want to investigate, test and troubleshoot when something does not work as expected.

The position entails among other things working with

  • use of web interfaces for detector cameras and control devices
  • creation, adjustment, testing and trialing of signal programs in software
  • work in traffic management systems, e.g. MobiMaestro and RMS
  • use of tools such as SharePoint and Excel to analyze data, document solutions and create system overview
  • understanding of software, program logic and the interaction between the systems

You do not need to know everything from the start – but you should have a desire to learn, explore and work with the technology behind the systems.

Your profile

We envisage that you

  • have an academic background as an engineer or similar technical education – preferably in road and traffic
  • are interested in traffic signals, traffic management and ITS
  • have experience with or an interest in working with traffic signal design and programming
  • can work analytically with traffic and system data and translate data into concrete improvements
  • have a flair for IT and digital tools
  • can familiarise yourself with technical systems and understand the relationships between software, hardware and traffic operations
  • have knowledge of relevant road regulations or a desire to build this knowledge
  • have experience from supplier, consultant, municipality or another public administration (an advantage, but not a requirement)

As a person you work in a structured and methodical way and deliver high quality in your writing in both Danish and English. You are self-driven, follow your tasks to the end and can communicate technical issues clearly to different professional groups and partners. You value knowledge sharing and thrive in collaboration. You not only get the solutions to work in the field, but also ensure proper documentation of your work.

Your workplace – Trafiktårnet and Islands Brygge 37

You will be based at the Trafiktårnet in Copenhagen – a 24-hour operational control centre and Denmark's largest professional environment for traffic signals. Here you will become part of the Traffic Signal, Information and ITS Team and receive close sparring with skilled colleagues. The rest of the unit and the administration are based at Islands Brygge 37, where you will also meet with colleagues.

Salary and employment terms

As an employee of the City of Copenhagen you get good opportunities for work-life balance with an average 37-hour work week including a lunch break. Part-time down to 32 hours per week is possible.

Salary and employment terms are set according to the applicable collective agreement and negotiated based on your qualifications.

The position is to be filled as soon as possible
