Unemployed

What does it mean?

Unemployed (arbejdsløs) describes a person who does not currently have paid employment, is available to take work and is actively seeking a job. In Denmark, unemployment status triggers contact with the job centre and possibly your a-kasse.

If you are insured through an a-kasse and meet the work requirement, you can receive unemployment benefits (dagpenge). If not, you may receive cash benefits (kontanthjælp) from the municipality after a means test.

You must register as unemployed on jobnet.dk on the first day of unemployment, create a CV and comply with activity requirements: applying for jobs, attending meetings and accepting reasonable offers.

Unemployment can be stressful. Use your a-kasse, job centre and network for support. Short-term unemployment is common; focus on structured job search and skill development.
