Base salary

What does it mean?

Base salary (grundløn) is the fixed core remuneration in your employment, excluding variable components such as overtime, commissions, shift supplements and bonuses.

In collective agreements, base pay often increases with seniority steps (anciennitet). Supplements for evening, weekend or special duties are added on top.

When comparing job offers, distinguish base salary from total compensation including pension, bonus potential and benefits. Negotiations typically focus on base unless the role is heavily commission-based.

Your employment contract should state base salary clearly. Payslips show base plus supplements separately — verify both when checking payment accuracy.
