About the job
Responsibility for daily management and operations at Holmen's Cemetery
Holmens Kirkegård is a historic cemetery and an important green area in the city. As an active funeral cemetery it sets requirements for both daily operations, preservation of cultural-historical values and meeting with relatives and visitors.
We are seeking a cemetery assistant who will take responsibility for day-to-day life at the cemetery. You will lead the gardener group, ensure coherence in operations and meet relatives with calm and respect. At the same time you will have the opportunity to influence the development of our cemetery facilities, working methods and organization.
The position is a permanent full-time role of 37 hours per week with preferred start date 1 January 2027.
About Holmens and Garnisons Cemeteries
Holmens and Garnisons Cemeteries are one organisation with two historic cemeteries in Copenhagen and operations in Mindelunden. The organisation is led by a cemetery board with the cemetery manager as daily leader. We have gardeners and gardener workers, a shared cemetery administration as well as accounting and HR functions. As cemetery assistant you will be part of a close leadership collaboration with the cemetery manager and the chief gardener at Garnisons Cemetery.
Close leadership of staff and work
You will be the daily personnel and operations leader at Holmens Cemetery, where the gardener group consists of nine permanent staff and six seasonal gardeners and gardener workers.
You create overview, set priorities for tasks and follow up on the work. You are available to employees, use their professional knowledge and experience, and set a clear direction for everyday life.
You are visible and accessible on the cemetery and regularly participate in the practical work together with the gardeners. The scope varies with season, tasks and the need for leadership and coordination. Your participation must ensure that you have a feel for operations and close contact with the staff.
You handle holiday planning and employee development interviews, participate in hiring and monitor wellbeing and sick leave in collaboration with the cemetery manager.
A daily life with operations, coordination and contact with relatives
You are responsible for planning the green operations, maintenance and construction work at Holmens Cemetery. You also ensure that the cemetery's tasks for burials, funeral rites and urn burial are well coordinated and carried out with dignity.
You will have your own office at the cemetery office at Holmens Cemetery and work closely with the administrative staff. They handle the ordinary daily office operations, while you contribute to administration and coordinate agreements and tasks between the office and the gardener group.
You will be one of the cemetery's central faces outward. You will guide relatives and have contact with funeral directors, suppliers and other partners.
Leadership collaboration and joint tasks
You report to the cemetery manager and actively participate in the management team. Here you contribute to the development of facilities, machines and working methods and to strengthen cooperation across Holmens and Garnisons Cemeteries.
Together with the chief gardener at Garnisons you coordinate our operational tasks in Mindelunden, where gardeners from both cemeteries work. You participate in operations meetings with Mindelunden's daily leader and follow up on the agreed tasks.
In the absence of the cemetery manager, the shared leadership tasks are distributed between you and the chief gardener by agreement.
Who are you?
You have a relevant green education, solid professional knowledge and experience with operation and maintenance of green areas. You want to take responsibility for both people and operations. You could be, for example, an urban landscape engineer/horticultural engineer, agricultural technologist with a specialty in landscape and facilities, or an installation gardener. Other relevant green educations are also welcome.
You preferably have experience with personnel management or work leadership. You can also be ready for your first supervisory position based on experience with coordination, planning and technical instruction.
We value that you
- Can translate your green professional knowledge into good care, maintenance and quality in the work.
- Listen to staff, set direction and follow up on decisions and agreements.
- Can prioritise tasks and resources and adapt planning when everyday life changes.
- Meets employees, relatives and partners with respect and clarity.
- Is familiar with IT and communicates clearly, orally and in writing.
- Has a eye for improvements and actively contributes to collaboration in the management team.
Experience from cemetery operations is an advantage, but you can also bring relevant experience from for example park operations, a landscaping company or the operation of larger green facilities.
What you get with us
You will get a position with independent leadership responsibility and the opportunity to put your professional mark on a historic cemetery with green facilities in the heart of Copenhagen.
You will get close sparring with the cemetery manager and active collaboration in the management team. Your everyday life will be varied and connect personnel leadership, practical work, contact with relatives and development.
Our shared values are dignity, kindness and professionalism . They should be felt in the way we meet people, collaborate and perform our work.
Salary and terms of employment
The position is a permanent full-time role averaging 37 hours per week. The work mainly takes place on weekdays, but weekend work may occur.
Employment is based on the applicable joint agreement between the Ministry of Finance and LC/CO10 as well as the collective agreement for cemetery managers, senior administrators and cemetery assistants, etc.
The position is placed in salary group 1. The base salary is 410,608.29 DKK per year, plus a central management allowance of 2,928.37 DKK per year, both as of 1 August 2026. The amounts are adjusted according to the collective agreement.
