About the job

We are seeking from 01 January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter one (1) chief physician (afdelingslæge) for the Department for Intensive Treatment of Newborns and Small Children (GN), Juliane Marie Centre, Rigshospitalet.

You as chief physician will be placed in the department's team of permanently employed specialists depending on your competences and areas of interest. Upon appointment you will also undergo an intensive qualification process, which will enable you to handle both on-call and transport physician roles in daily work and thus be able to participate in the treatment of all patient categories in the department (see below). The position carries on-call duties, on par with the other permanently employed specialists.

The department's responsibilities and tasks

GN offers highly specialized treatment to newborns as well as intensive care for children up to 1 (-2) years of age in close collaboration with a wide range of Rigshospitalet's other intensive care departments as well as the country’s other neonatal, pediatric and intensive care units.

Among our highly specialized fields can be mentioned: Extreme prematurity (born at Rigshospitalet has national functions for children with congenital heart disease, and GN forms an integrated part of Rigshospitalet's Unit for Congenital Heart Diseases. In addition, GN is also the country’s main responsible for ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) treatment of children.

GN has an integrated PICU (pediatric intensive care unit), where we treat children up to 1 (-2) years with the need for intensive therapy, but we collaborate closely with the other intensive care units at RH on the development and operation of an independent PICU, which in the long term is to be established at Mary Elizabeth's Hospital (MARYS).

Last but not least, GN’s permanently employed specialists – together with some of the department's most skilled, intensively trained nurses – participate in the Transport Team, which annually performs about 150-200 high-risk, up-scale transports of children

Department leadership principles, organization and work environment

We follow the evolving leadership principles, and we prioritize trust-based delegation of the professional leadership to the staff. The department is organized according to a matrix model (Department for Intensive Treatment of Newborns and Small Children), where a number of interdisciplinary management teams are responsible for the development of care and treatment of specific patient groups, support and staff functions.

We work from family-centered principles, and the parents are involved in all parts of our organization, just as a parent representative is a permanent member of our Management Group.

We solve our demanding tasks in daily, close, collegial, mono- and multidisciplinary collaboration. The unpredictability and the acute nature of our work with large emotional strains as well as sometimes sudden time and workload pressure place great demands on all professional groups and our ability to work together, support and help one another.

We place great emphasis on maintaining an open and appreciative work environment with a high degree of psychological safety, where the ability to give, receive and request feedback is central to achieving this goal.

We want a work environment where we can openly and honestly talk about what is difficult, what we do not know, and the mistakes we make with a view to continually developing ourselves and our department and specialty, learning from and with each other, but where we also celebrate the many successes we experience.

Mary Elizabeth’s Hospital, NICU/PICU, New Hospital Bispebjerg and Region East

You, as a permanently employed chief physician, will actively participate in the preparation for and the work toward moving into Mary Elizabeth’s Hospital, planned for the turn of the year 2027/2028. We have great ambitions to jointly with Rigshospitalet's other specialties create a world-class hospital for children and families with particular focus on NICU/PICU.

Currently we are working with all of Rigshospitalet’s other intensive care departments to establish a PICU within the Intensive Care Unit 4131, where we jointly offer treatment to PICU children. This requires a consistent cross-disciplinary and cross-professional effort, and an understanding, respect for and curiosity about each other’s knowledge, competencies and work routines.

The establishment of a mother–baby center at Nyt Hospital Bispebjerg (NHB) has been decided, and here GN will play a central role in ensuring correct treatment of the expected more children born. Our task will be to accommodate these extra inpatient pathways and simultaneously build an independent neonatal ward, which in due course will be moved to NHB.

Finally you will also be involved in the work to strengthen our chain- and population-based responsibility in a forthcoming Region East.

Rigshospitalet’s vision

We stay true to Rigshospitalet’s vision of being of benefit to the individual patient and the health system as a whole and actively work with the four compass points: 1) Value for the patient, 2) connectedness, 3) unlocking potential and 4) internationalization.

Qualifications

You are a pediatrician with either completed or ongoing expert training in neonatology. With your professional expertise you have both interest and flair for one or more documented areas of expertise relevant to the department's special patient groups, support or staff functions.

Emphasis is placed on you remaining research-active and having experience with clinical change projects, or otherwise contributing to the development of our care and treatment principles. In addition to your own continued education, you should be able to contribute constructively to the educational task we have. It is therefore an advantage if you have documented experience with pre- and post-graduate teaching and education.

We are looking for a person with very good collaboration and communication skills, who can contribute constructively and positively to the department's and the specialty's development as well as the interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaboration described above.

Salary and conditions of employment

Salary and employment conditions are set in accordance with the applicable agreement for junior doctors entered into between Young Doctors and the Regional Salary and Tariff Board.

On-call duties, on-call service and teaching

The position is associated with on-call duties. The position is for the time being not associated with out-of-hospital service. The position includes functions with pre- and post-graduate education.
