About the job

Do you want to lead the work with management, operation and maintenance of large and small bridge structures across Denmark? Then you may be our new Head of Bridge Structure Management.

Bridge Structure Management in the Danish Road Directorate (Vejdirektoratet) is growing and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of about 4,800 bridge structures on the state road network. When our bridge structures need renovation and future-proofing, our task is to ensure this is done as a balanced solution between many important disciplines, e.g. bridge engineering, traffic management and working environment.

Operation and maintenance of bridge structures spans many areas and disciplines, e.g.: structural works, mechanical and electrical installations on larger bridges and in tunnels, pumping bridge structures, road lighting, as well as OT operation (Operational Technology),

In this position you will have the opportunity to lead a department with skilled employees who have many years of expertise in this area. Through effective collaboration with other departments, advisors, suppliers and research, the department stays at the forefront of technical solutions that ensure the best possible management of the state's bridge structures.

Your tasks

The role as department head requires visible leadership, strong prioritization and systematic follow-up to ensure high quality and efficient task execution.

"To succeed in the role, you must be close to both employees and tasks. It requires managerial involvement, continuous prioritization and persistent follow-up," explains Area Manager Jakob Schwartz.

You will among other things have the responsibility to

  • lead about 20 engineers, project managers and specialists within operation and maintenance of bridge structures
  • bring professional issues forward and engage in dialogue with other authorities, e.g. municipalities
  • support both the individual employee and the solution of the team’s tasks
  • support continued development within bridge structure management, involve and align expectations for task solutions and development both for your employees and the area manager

You will become part of the overall management group in the area Fortifications, Bridge Structures and Geotechnics and will report to the Area Manager Jakob Schwartz. Management in the Danish Road Directorate is characterized by an informal collaboration, where open dialogue, trust and engagement shape daily life.

Your profile

We imagine that you have a relevant technical or academic background, but there may be several paths to the position. You are an experienced leader with strong competencies in strategic leadership, organizational development and creating results through others.

We would like you to

  • have solid experience in managing specialists and employees with great professional expertise and independence
  • have strong competencies within management of bridge structures, operation and maintenance as well as asset management
  • have good process understanding and experience navigating a politically governed organization
  • be able to translate strategic goals into concrete results and foster cross-functional collaboration
  • be initiative-taking, proactive and have a good overview, even when the agenda is complex
  • possess strong relational skills and be able to create engagement, well-being and shared results

It will be an advantage if you have knowledge of mechanical and electrical installations as well as OT operation (Operational Technology), including critical technical installations and related control systems.

Welcome to Bridge Structure Management

You will be the leader of Bridge Structure Management, which is the competence center for all bridge-structure related work at the Danish Road Directorate. We are responsible for the operation and management of bridge structures on state roads and other infrastructure projects.

The Bridge Structure Management team will primarily focus on operation and maintenance, but many employees have, and will continue to have, projects in all phases, including expansion of existing bridge structures and new construction. You will become part of an attractive workplace with high employee well-being, and you will work in a dynamic matrix organization with opportunities for knowledge sharing in both internal and national and international networks.

Bridge Structure Management consists of about 20 employees, roughly half at the Danish Road Directorate’s office in Hedehusene, and half in Skanderborg. You will be based at one of these two service locations.

You will be part of an organization where flexibility, skill development and work-life balance are high on the agenda. There will be an opportunity for remote work days.
