About the job
Chief of Ambulatory Care for the Department of Children and Young People, Herlev Hospital (RE-POST)
We are re-announcing the position of chief of ambulatory care, as we continue to search for the perfect profile for this important leadership role. We are looking for a pediatrician with an interest in leadership and a desire to help develop the future outpatient services for children, adolescents, and their families.
Do you want to help strengthen the medical leadership in one of the country’s largest pediatric departments?
The Department of Children and Young People at Herlev Hospital is seeking a chief of ambulatory care for a newly created position with responsibility for the department's outpatient area.
The position is established as part of strengthening the medical leadership structure. The department has grown in size and complexity, and we want to create greater leadership proximity to the medical staff, strengthen professional leadership, and ensure the necessary leadership capacity for continued development of the department.
At the Department of Children and Young People we work according to the vision
"The Department of Children and Young People will be an attractive workplace characterized by high professionalism. We will be leaders in education, development, research and innovation in order to provide the best care and treatment to children, adolescents and their families."
As chief of ambulatory care you will be a central part of the department’s overall leadership structure. You will, together with the chief physician and another chief physician, contribute to the medical leadership of a department with around 70 doctors and substantial tasks related to patient care, quality, education, research and development.
The responsibilities between the chief physician and the two chief physicians will be allocated based on competencies, experience and interests. We place emphasis on creating a role where both the department’s needs and your strengths are best utilized.
The position is to be filled by 1 February 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.
About the position
As chief of ambulatory care you will play a central role in the management and development of a large and complex outpatient area with around 26,000 annual patient visits, of which about 10,000 are virtual visits.
The department’s ambulatory care includes both highly specialized functions and large general patient pathways. Here, children and adolescents are treated in areas including, among others, neuro-pediatrics, allergology, endocrinology, infectious pediatrics, nephrology, gastroenterology and cardiology.
The ambulatory care includes a large multidisciplinary neuro-pediatric team with doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, a psychologist and a social worker. In addition, highly specialized functions are handled for Tourette’s syndrome and specialized headache assessment, just as the allergy team handles highly specialized assessment of food allergies for the upcoming Region East, as well as biologic treatment of asthma. In addition, the ambulatory care houses strong professional environments within endocrinology, infectious pediatrics, nephrology, gastroenterology and pediatric cardiology.
The department also has a substantial educational mission with daily supervised ambulatory functions for doctors in training. Therefore, education, supervision and competence development are an integrated part of daily operations.
The neonatal and social pediatrics ambulatory services are organizationally anchored in their respective clinical units.
The position is established with the aim of leadership close to the clinic. As chief of ambulatory care you will be responsible for the overall management and development of the ambulatory area in close collaboration with the ambulatory chief nurse, the clinical leads and the department’s other leadership.
A significant part of the role is medical staff leadership. Together with the chief physician and other leadership, you will contribute to creating attractive professional environments and support employees’ development, well-being and career progression. The role therefore includes tasks related to staff development, competence development, recruitment, retention and leadership coaching of doctors.
You will also play a central role in developing future outpatient services. Tasks include operational management, capacity management and planning, but also development of new ways of working and patient pathways that support the health reform’s ambition to provide care closer to patients’ daily lives.
The position also entails responsibility for quality, patient safety and organizational learning. You should contribute to development work based on quality data, national quality databases, patient experiences, patient complaints and adverse events, and support the implementation of improvements in clinical practice.
Collaboration across disciplines, units and sectors will be a significant part of the job. You will therefore have a central role in developing coherent patient pathways and in collaboration with relevant internal and external partners, including the practice consultant.
You will not be alone in the tasks. On the contrary, we expect that you, together with the ambulatory chief nurse, the clinical leads, the department’s other leaders and staff, contribute to our culture of rising to the task together.
The position is primarily a leadership role. At the same time, we want the chief of ambulatory care to retain a clear clinical anchor. The extent of the clinical function is expected to constitute about 30-40% of working time and will be agreed closer to the department’s needs as well as your competencies and interests. The clinical function may be within one of the department’s ambulatory specialties and/or at the department’s acute ward.
The chief of ambulatory care will participate, on equal terms with the department’s other consultants, in on-call duties, including extended day work and weekend rounds.
About you
You are a board-certified pediatrician with solid clinical experience.
You may already have leadership experience through formal or informal leadership roles. It may also be that you have, over time, developed motivation and interest in taking on greater responsibility for developing people, professional environments and the organization.
We seek a colleague who is driven by leadership, collaboration and development, and who is eager to actively contribute to shaping a new leadership function in the department.
We value that you
- have strong relational and communication skills
- are able to build following and collaborate across disciplines and organizational units
- have an interest in personnel management and development of staff
- have an eye for both operations, quality and long-term development
- can create structure, direction and momentum in complex processes
- work trustfully, respectfully and in a collaborative manner
We do not expect you to know everything from day one. The most important thing is that you want to join an ambitious leadership role and actively contribute to the department’s continued development.
