About the job

Senior Consultant in Head and Neck Surgery

Otolaryngology Department, Aalborg University Hospital, seeks a senior consultant with a role in head and neck surgery and tumor surgery. We are looking for an experienced specialist who will contribute to the department's clinical and operative tasks and at the same time play an active role in research and professional development.

We want a senior consultant who can be clinically active and preferably also help develop research activities and/or education grounded in the department's clinical work and contribute to translating new knowledge into better patient pathways.

Starting date: 1 April 2027 or by agreement

Application deadline: 23 November 2026

Interviews: 15 December 2026 in the afternoon

About the position

You will become part of the department's head and neck surgical team and join the overall senior consultant collegium. The position includes evaluation, treatment and follow-up of patients with diseases in the head and neck region, including cancer patients, as well as relevant operative tasks within the department's surgical portfolio.

The primary function is at Aalborg University Hospital, Hospital Town in Gistrup. In limited circumstances there may be duties at Aalborg University Hospital’s South Campus and in Thisted.

You will participate in the department's interdisciplinary collaboration and multidisciplinary patient pathways. The concrete clinical tasks, operative functions and on-call commitments are planned according to the department's needs and agreed based on your competencies.

Your primary tasks

You are expected to

  • conduct clinical assessment, treatment and follow-up of patients within the head and neck area
  • perform relevant head and neck surgical procedures within your documented competencies and the department's current surgical portfolio
  • participate in relevant multidisciplinary team conferences and contribute to coherent patient pathways
  • collaborate with relevant specialties and professional groups on evaluation, treatment and follow-up
  • contribute to supervision and education of junior doctors as well as training of relevant staff groups
  • participate in the department's quality work and professional development
  • join the department's on-call readiness according to the agreed division of work.

Research and education

We place particular emphasis on you actively contributing to research and education beyond clinical and surgical duties. You are expected to collaborate with the department's medical lead for research and relevant research environments to develop and implement research and educational activities within the head and neck area.

We do not require all applicants to have the same research profile. We value documented research experience or a clear interest and motivation to develop research activities that align with the department's clinical duties. A PhD degree and experience with project management, publications or grant applications would be an advantage.

We are seeking a senior consultant who

  • is a specialist in oto-rhino-laryngology
  • has relevant clinical and operative competencies within head and neck surgery
  • works in an evidence-based manner and understands the links between clinical practice, research and development
  • collaborates constructively across disciplines and specialties
  • communicates clearly and respectfully with patients, relatives and colleagues
  • is eager to contribute to the department's educational mission
  • takes responsibility for professional quality, patient safety and development of patient pathways.

Experience with head and neck cancer, multidisciplinary pathways, research or research collaboration will be given weight. Applicants are assessed overall against the position's tasks and the specialty physician's seven roles.

About the department

The Otolaryngology Department handles ear-nose-throat surgical functions for the North Jutland Region and collaborates with relevant departments and professional groups at Aalborg University Hospital. The department prioritizes high professional quality, research, education and development of patient pathways.
