About the job

We are seeking from 1 January 2027 or as soon as possible one (1) consultant physician for the Department of Intensive Care for Newborns and Small Children (GN), Juliane Marie Center, Rigshospitalet.

Department's responsibilities and tasks

GN offers highly specialized care for newborns and intensive care for children up to 1 (-2) years of age in close collaboration with a wide range of Rigshospitalet's other intensive care departments as well as the country's other neonatal-, pediatric-, and intensive care departments.

Among our highly specialized areas can be mentioned: Extreme prematurity (born

Rigshospitalet has national function for children with congenital heart disease, and GN forms an integrated part of Rigshospitalet's Unit for Congenital Heart Disease . In addition, GN is also the country’s main responsibility for ECMO ( extra corporeal membrane oxygenation ) treatment of children

GN has an integrated PICU ( pediatric intensive care unit ), where we treat children up to 1 (-2) years old in need of intensive therapy, but work closely with the other intensive care departments at RH on establishing and running an independent PICU, which in the long term will be established at Mary Elizabeth's Hospital (MARYS).

Last but not least, GN's permanent physicians – together with some of the department's most skilled, intensive-trained nurses – form part of the Transport Team, which annually carries out approx. 150-200 high-risk, up-scale transports of children

Department's leadership principles, organization and work environment

We follow the developing leadership principles, and we prioritize trust-based delegation of professional leadership to the staff. The department is organized according to a matrix model ( Department of Intensive Care for Newborns and Small Children ), where a number of interdisciplinary leadership teams are responsible for the development of care and treatment of specific patient groups, support and staff functions.

We work from family-centered principles, and the parents participate in all parts of our organization, just as a parent representative is a permanent member of our Management Group.

We solve our demanding tasks in a daily, close, collegial, mono- and cross-disciplinary collaboration. The unpredictability and the acute nature of our work with large emotional loads as well as occasionally sudden time and workload pressures place great demands on all professions and our ability to work together, support and help each other.

We have a strong daily focus on maintaining an open and appreciative work environment with a high degree of psychological safety , where the ability to give, receive and request feedback is central to achieving this goal.

We want a work environment where we can openly and honestly talk about what is difficult, what we do not know, and the mistakes we make, with the aim of constantly developing ourselves and our department and specialty, learning from and with each other, but where we also celebrate the many successes we experience.

Rigshospitalet, NICU/PICU, New Hospital Bispebjerg and Region East

As a consultant you will actively participate in the preparation for and work towards moving to Mary Elizabeth's Hospital , which is planned for the turn of the year 2027/2028. We have big ambitions to jointly with Rigshospitalet’s other specialties create a world-class hospital for children and families with particular focus on NICU/PICU.

At present we are collaborating with all Rigshospitalet's other intensive care departments to establish a PICU within intensive care ward 4131, where we jointly offer treatment to PICU children. This requires a consistent interdisciplinary and cross-professional effort, and an understanding of, respect for and curiosity about each other’s knowledge, competencies and working routines.

The establishment of a mother-child center at New Hospital Bispebjerg (NHB) has been decided, and here GN will play a central role in ensuring correct treatment of the expected additional number of children born. Our task will be to accommodate these extra admission processes and concurrently build an independent neonatal ward, which in the long term will be moved to NHB.

Finally you will also be involved in the work to strengthen our chain- and population responsibility in a coming Region East.

Rigshospitalet's vision

We are faithful to Rigshospitalet's vision to benefit the individual patient and the overall health system and actively work with the four guiding principles: 1) Value for the patient, 2) connectivity, 3) liberation and 4) internationalization.

Qualifications

You are a pediatric specialist with a relevant postgraduate qualification for us. You have one or more documented areas of expertise that are relevant to GN's patient groups and/or support functions. You have experience with inter-hospital transports, and we would like you to have knowledge of and experience with ECMO.

It is emphasized that you are active in research and quality improvement, have concrete experience with clinical change projects as well as pre- and post-graduate teaching and education and continue to have ambitions to further develop our professional practice, subspecialty, care and treatment of seriously ill very young children.

It is crucial that with your personality and professional skills you can contribute to a good mono- and multi-disciplinary working environment and collaboration with all professional groups, collaborating departments and parents of the admitted children.

You may be seeking a position at the Department of Intensive Care for Newborns and Small Children at Rigshospitalet, among other reasons due to your own ambitions and career, but we expect that you fundamentally wish to become part of and contribute to our community.

The assessment of your professional qualifications will be based on information about your own competences within each of the competence areas, cf. "Guidelines for professional assessment of applicants for consultant positions in the Capital Region" from 2007, which can be seen at Professional assessment for consultant positions .
