Sexton wanted for Zion Church in Esbjerg

Zion's Parish seeks a church sexton for a full-time position at 37 hours per week with start 1 January 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

About Zion's Parish

Zion's Parish is a large and active parish in the middle of Esbjerg with 6,678 inhabitants, of whom 5,131 are members of the Church of Denmark.

The church provides the framework for a diverse community with people of all ages and life situations. We have a wide range of services, church rites, concerts and other activities, and as a church sexton you will play a central role in creating good and safe surroundings for the many people who come to the church and the parish house.

You will become part of a team consisting of two organists, two priests, a church sexton colleague, a verger/daily leader and a church and culture employee.

• are prepared that the work also occurs at times when many others are off, including evenings and weekends.

If you already have the mandatory church sexton training, that is an advantage, but not a requirement.

Your tasks

As a church sexton you will have a varied day with practical, technical and service-oriented tasks. Your duties will include, among others:

• preparation and participation in services, church rites and concerts, including responsibility for decoration
• catering and practical assistance at meetings and events in the parish house, including light kitchen work
• cleaning of the church, the parish house, chapel and workshop
• maintenance of outdoor areas
• operation of technical installations and IT
• procurement and coordination of craftsmen in collaboration with the churchwarden.

Employment terms

The position is 37 hours per week .

There is a three-month probation period, and as part of the recruitment, criminal record and child protection checks will be obtained.

If you do not already have the mandatory five-week education for church sextons, it must be completed within two years after the start of employment.

The employment is with Zion's Parish Council, Nygårdsvej 103, 6700 Esbjerg.

Salary and collective agreement

The employment is covered by the Common Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and Public Employees Organizations (OAO-S) as well as the Organization Agreement for church functionaries with core duties as church sexton or gravedigger, entered into between the Ministry of Ecclesiastical Affairs and the Danish Church Sextons Association, with an accompanying protocol for church sextons.

The annual salary falls within the range of DKK 324,667–408,841 in present-day kroner.

There is a standby obligation to the position. The standby allowance amounts to DKK 33,230.62 per year in present-day kroner. In addition, there is an OK allowance of DKK 1,400.52 per year in present-day kroner.

An agreement on placement within the salary interval is made between the parish council and the Danish Church Sextons Association. Salary, OK allowance and standby allowance are quotaed in accordance with the position's employment fraction.

Current civil servant church sextons have the right to preserve their civil servant status on direct transfer. In that case, the position must be classified.
