Employee

What does it mean?

An employee (arbejdstager) is a person who works for an employer under an employment contract, is subject to the employer's direction and receives remuneration — typically salary or wages.

Employee status is distinct from self-employment, freelancing and certain contractor relationships. Misclassification can deny you rights to holiday pay, notice periods and unemployment insurance.

Employees in Denmark enjoy extensive rights: minimum terms under collective agreements, anti-discrimination protection, working environment standards, parental leave and access to unemployment benefits when insured.

Key documents defining your status: employment contract, payslips, tax card and any collective agreement coverage. Consult your union if unsure whether your arrangement is genuine employment.
