Terms of employment

What does it mean?

Terms of employment (arbejdsvilkår) are the contractual and legal conditions governing your work relationship. They include base pay, supplements, working hours, overtime rules, holiday, pension, place of work, job title, tasks and notice period.

Terms may come from: individual employment contract, collective agreement (overenskomst), company policies and mandatory legislation. Collective agreements often set floors that individual contracts cannot go below.

Always read your contract before signing. Negotiate key terms — salary, pension, remote work, bonus and notice — before accepting an offer. Verbal promises should be confirmed in writing.

If terms change materially, the employer typically must give notice or obtain your consent. Significant worsening can constitute constructive dismissal in some cases — seek union advice.
