Parental leave cover
What does it mean?
Parental leave cover (barselsvikariat) is a temporary employment arrangement where you replace an employee on parental leave (barsel). The position runs for a defined period — typically until the permanent employee returns, often 6–12 months or longer.
These roles are common in the public sector and larger private employers. They offer valuable experience and a foot in the door, but job security ends when the cover period expires unless you are offered a permanent role.
Rights during parental leave cover follow normal employment rules: pay, holiday, notice and working environment. You are not entitled to keep the job when the absent employee returns.
When applying, clarify the exact duration, possibility of extension and whether the employer has a history of hiring cover staff permanently.
