Fixed-term position

What does it mean?

Fixed-term employment (tidsbegrænset stilling) has a defined end date or end trigger (project completion, cover for absence). Governed by the Act on Fixed-Term Employment limiting successive fixed-term contracts.

After repeated renewals or chaining of fixed-term contracts, the position may convert to permanent employment by law. Employers cannot indefinitely avoid permanent status through renewals.

Fixed-term roles suit project work, maternity cover and seasonal peaks. Employees retain core rights: pay, holiday, working environment and anti-discrimination protection.

Read your contract for end date, renewal possibilities and notice if terminated early. Plan next steps before expiry — employers sometimes offer permanent roles to strong performers.
