About the job

Do you want to help create a everyday life where older sign language users not only live, but belong?

So read on here. We are looking for an employee of 10-12 hours per week for our newly established department for older sign language users at the care center Møllehuset.

We are in the process of creating a place where older sign language users can feel at home, be part of the community and meet staff who understand their communication and their way of being in the world.

We are aware that the sign language users' concepts and life experience can differ from what hearing people experience. Therefore we are looking for an employee who, with strong sign language skills and knowledge of Deaf culture and life experience, can help strengthen communication and relationships in daily life.

Who are you?

We are looking for you who have a good sense of people and can see that communication is much more than words and signs. You know that a glance, a movement, a change in facial expressions or a certain behavior can tell something important – and you want to help staff notice it.

You have knowledge of and understanding of Deaf culture, history and concepts and an eye for the particular cognitive and communicative challenges that can arise among older sign language users. We hope you are curious about what lies behind a reaction or behavior, and thus have a sense of creating understanding rather than misunderstandings.

Your role

The staff are already engaged in a competency development program in sign language. Therefore your role will not be to 'translate everything', but to support the staff's development and be part of creating good communication and good relationships in daily life. Your tasks will include among others to

  • support the communication between sign language users and the staff
  • contribute to sign language users becoming a natural and active part of the department's community
  • support the staff in developing their communicative competencies and become even better at meeting sign language users on their terms
  • participate in selected daily activities and joint events, e.g. meals, coffee, events and Friday bars.

A part of everyday life and community

Although the position is 10-12 hours per week, you play an important function in the department, and you will have the opportunity to help shape the role together with the sign language users and the staff.

You are present where your professional expertise can make a difference. You may eat lunch together, have a chat over coffee, participate in the Friday bar or take part in an activity. In this way, you contribute to sign language users not becoming bystanders to the community, but becoming an active part of it. At the same time, you can provide staff with concrete experiences and perspectives they can use in daily life.

About Møllehuset

The care home Møllehuset is part of The City of the Elderly and has 80 apartments spread over four floors with 20 residents on each floor. The house has just reopened after a fire renovation period and has consequently gained 10 dedicated places for older deaf people. We have our own production kitchen and run a bakery that supplies the five care homes in The City of the Elderly.

We are a house in motion, where professionalism, development, community and integrity matter. You will become part of a close multidisciplinary collaboration with social and health care assistants, social and health care helpers, social educators, nurses as well as our cross-disciplinary teams.

Employment terms

We offer an exciting and meaningful job of 10-12 hours per week, tailored to tasks and events. The number of hours can vary, so there will be opportunities for more hours in some periods and fewer in others. We hope you can start as soon as possible. Pay and employment terms follow the applicable collective agreement and within the framework of local pay formation.

If you have previously been employed by the City of Copenhagen, additional applies
