Interpreter in Ukrainian

DO YOU WANT TO BE AN INTERPRETER AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

Do you want to strengthen your language skills and use them to make a difference? As a Ukrainian-speaking civil-military interpreter you contribute to the execution of the Defence's Ukraine-related tasks at home and abroad. As a Ukrainian civil-military interpreter you will handle all types of interpreting tasks such as interpretation of military training/education, meetings and written translations.

About us

The Defence upholds Denmark's and the Realm’s sovereignty and is part of the nation's overall readiness. The Defence also contributes to international conflict prevention and capacity building, just as the Defence participates in peacekeeping and peace-enforcing missions when Parliament decides to deploy the Defence’s military expertise and capacity.

About the position

The position is a training position and the appointment is limited to the training period (approximately 4 months). The training period runs from the start of February to the end of May 2027.

During the training you will undergo the civil-military interpreter training in Ukrainian, consisting of 3 weeks of basic military training (in Jutland) and 10 weeks of military interpreter training at the Defence Language School (FSS) in Copenhagen. Some travel activity should be expected during this period.

BASIC MILITARY TRAINING

Jutland 3 weeks .

The program will give you a shortened military basic training, where you are trained in basic military skills including weapon handling, first aid, basic theory and marksmanship duties.

MILITARY INTERPRETER TRAINING

Defence Language School in Copenhagen 10 weeks.

Along the way in the specialized training to become a civil-military interpreter you will develop your linguistic skills, cultural understanding and military knowledge.

The program will introduce you to a broad, technical vocabulary in both Ukrainian and Danish, as well as intensive training in the various aspects of interpreting, including interpreting techniques, ethics and cultural guidance.

Upon completion you will be offered an attachment agreement, so that you join the Defence Forces' reserve of civil-military interpreters.

As a trained civil-military interpreter in the reserve you may be offered assignments where the Defence Forces require Ukrainian interpreter support.

The tasks range widely and can be of short or long duration. Shorter tasks may last from 1-30 days in Denmark and longer assignments from 1 to 6 months abroad. The specific interpreting/translation tasks include:

  • Interpreting of training of military forces
  • Meeting interpretation
  • Interpreting briefings
  • Written translation tasks
  • Cultural guidance
  • Occasional interpretations of daily tasks

The attachment agreement covers a period of 4 years, during which you are not obliged to render service to the Defence Forces, but the Defence Forces cannot guarantee you work.

About you

  • You speak Ukrainian, Danish and English
  • You must be at least 18 years old at the start of training
  • You must have Danish citizenship or residence permit (permanent or temporary)
  • You must have resided in Denmark or another EU/NATO country in the last 7 years
  • You can be security cleared. Read more about security clearance here

The Defence is NOT covered by the education cap.

Assessment

If you meet the formal entry requirements, you will be invited to an entrance test. Here you will undergo a series of tests that together give an indication of whether you are suited as an interpreter.

The entrance test consists of the following tests

  • Physical test: running and strength test (level 1, read more about the test here )
  • Written tests in Danish, English and Ukrainian
  • Oral test in Ukrainian
  • Interview with the Defence Language School
  • Interview with a psychologist
  • Health examination

It is recommended to train for and complete the physical test at home before the test is taken.

Employment terms

You are employed as a civil-military interpreter on a fixed-term individual contract of approximately four months.

Your base salary is 29,821.73 DKK per month. In addition, there is an employer-paid pension scheme of 15%. You also have the possibility to negotiate an individual personal allowance.

As an employee in the Defence Ministry’s group you are subject to certain special conditions. You must, among other things, be able to obtain security clearance and maintain it throughout the employment period.

Employment is conditional on passing the Defence’s physical basic requirements and being deemed fully fit for deployment in international operations by medical and dental assessments.
