About the job

Are you passionate about working with data and statistics? And are you at the same time a professional beacon, a good colleague, and ready for a challenge? Then you might be the perfect match for us!

In the Danish Prison Service's Office for Data and Analysis we work with data and statistics in one of the state's largest operating areas with great political attention.

The demand for solid policy- and business-supporting statistics and analyses has never been greater, and we are therefore seeking two engaged and professionally strong specialist or senior consultants with strong skills in data analysis and a desire to take on key positions in our Statistics Unit, including both collaborating with many internal and external stakeholders and producing responses and analyses to different inquiries of both operational and ad hoc nature.

The positions are to be filled as soon as possible.

About the Office for Data and Analysis

Data and Analysis is centrally located within the Danish Prison Service, in the Economic Division. The office consists of a statistics unit, a management information unit, and an evaluation unit. Our main task is to develop, operate and quality-assure Denmark’s Prison Service data and statistics on inmates and staff, as well as to prepare relevant, reliable and business-supporting analyses of high quality.

These tasks have a large and direct impact on ensuring that both the Danish Prison Service and external parties have the necessary and correct knowledge and information about the organisation’s operation and development. The office currently comprises 1 head of office, 2 deputy heads, 15 permanent staff members and 3 student assistants.

About the position

As an employee in the Statistics Unit you will become part of a team of skilled colleagues who work closely together to ensure data support for the Danish Prison Service.

Together with your colleagues in the statistics unit you will help obtain and quality-assure data from Denmark’s Prison Service’s administrative systems for use in larger and smaller development, operations and analysis tasks, including partly acting as a coordinator and driver in longer development tasks – e.g. in the preparation of forecast contributions – partly being a central part of our political readiness, which quickly and accurately finds answers to inquiries, often with very tight deadlines.

As part of the role you will work closely with the office management and often serve as a link between the Danish Prison Service, the Ministry of Justice and other stakeholders.

Your tasks

Your tasks will span the entire process from extracting data from relational databases to cleaning, analysing, describing and communicating data in a manner that makes data understandable to people without a statistics background. In this context you will work with debugging microdata and producing descriptive statistics, but also with producing projections of e.g. prison occupancy and staff, including performing various data analyses.

A large part of your work thus requires you to thoroughly understand the Danish Prison Service’s administrative systems, as you will become a key person behind the development and maintenance of the data extracts retrieved from the systems.

In addition you will in the position be able to work with

  • Preparation of data material for reporting on the political agreement, preparation for coalition meetings, budget analyses, etc.
  • Support of the Danish Prison Service’s management and drafting of decision and discussion papers on strategically important issues.
  • Support of the Ministry of Justice and the Parliament by quickly and accurately producing data-based answers to political questions, press inquiries and requests for access to information.
  • Coordination and collaboration with other parts of the Danish Prison Service, the prison wings, and international cooperation.

The position is therefore a good opportunity to both work analytically and concretely with a large and complex business area, where you will play a very important role in strengthening the unit’s, the agency’s and Denmark’s Prison Service’s work.

Initially - in addition to the Office suite - you will primarily work with SAS, SQL and Power BI, but experience and a willingness to code in R and Python are also very welcome.

Who are you?

We emphasize that you

  • Have a relevant educational background, e.g. in social sciences, statistics or similar.
  • Have experience in preparing notes for top management in a public organisation, including very preferably experience with ministerial servicing, responding to press inquiries or similar.
  • Have experience in performing data extraction and data analysis of especially register data within larger organisations, e.g. experience from ministries, agencies, municipalities, interest organisations or the research community.
  • Have in-depth knowledge of and experience with tools such as SAS, R and/or Python. It is also an advantage, but not a requirement, to have experience with processing Oracle data via SAS, as this is our primary statistics tool in daily use. Knowledge and experience with Power BI is also a plus.
  • Are proactive and enjoy the ‘craft’ of data processing and quality assurance, and good at both working independently and collaborating with others, including ensuring progress in task completion.
  • Are flexible, accommodating and good at collaborating with other professions than your own.
  • Thrive with a mix of repetitive operational tasks, concrete cases, longer development and analysis tasks, and ongoing ad hoc tasks with short lead times.
  • Have analytical acumen, professional curiosity and good written and oral communication skills.
  • Have a strong methodological approach and preferably with deep knowledge of register-based analysis and possibly also surveys.
  • Appreciate an informal and good social life at work.

What do we offer?

Challenging and varied tasks that involve broad interaction inside and outside the organisation, where responsibility and competence go hand in hand, including among others:

  • That you will have a key role as a professional beacon in a strong professional environment with qualified and cross-disciplinary colleagues.
  • That you will have the opportunity to collaborate with different professional groups in and outside the agency on the tasks you perform, including good opportunities to influence your task portfolio.
  • A relaxed tone with an open and safe work environment and good colleagues with diverse educational backgrounds.
  • Flexible working conditions, where a good balance between work life and private life is pursued.
  • We are ambitious but prioritise time for a good laugh and real collaboration in the office and with those we collaborate with.
  • The tasks in the office are in constant development, and there will be great potential for professional development and responsibility.

Salary and employment terms

Employment and compensation are carried out according to the applicable collective agreement for academics in the state Circular on the collective agreement for academics in the state | Rules, agreements and circulars

Further allowances may be agreed depending on experience and qualifications.

  • The position is a full-time role with a average working time of 37 hours per week.
  • The employment area is Denmark’s Prisons. The workplace is currently located at Strandgade 100, 1401 København K.
