About the job
Do you want to lead a brand-new family house and help shape it from the start?
As the first leader of TrygFonden’s Family House Aalborg, you get a rare opportunity to set direction and create the framework for a house that will make a noticeable difference for families when life is at its hardest. You will have a versatile role with great responsibility and ownership - close to families and volunteers and with relations to the hospital, companies, foundations and other partners.
We are looking for someone who primarily is passionate about the cause and wants to be the visible and unifying figure for the Family House.
About TrygFonden’s Family House Aalborg
TrygFonden’s Family House Aalborg is established at Aalborg University Hospital as an offering to families when a close family member is hospitalized in a longer-term, acute critical or chronic illness course.
When serious illness strikes, the whole family is affected. Everyday life is put on hold, the family may be torn between home and hospital, and practical and emotional burdens fill the days.
The family house should be a free space close to the hospital - a place where families can be together and maintain some of the everyday and family life that can be hard to fit in during an admission. Here there should be room for community and presence, but also to retreat and be themselves.
The house will have 10 family apartments along with common areas, and will be run as a self-governing institution with its own board. The daily operation is handled by the manager, an administrative employee and a corps of volunteers.
About the position
As the leader you step into a very special moment. You are not taking over a finished organization, but you will become a central part of creating it.
Your central areas of responsibility will be to
- be responsible for the daily management and operation of the Family House
- employ the administrative staff and build, lead and develop the Family House’s volunteer corps
- translate the Family House’s purpose and values into culture, workflows and a well-functioning everyday life
- build a close collaboration with relevant hospital departments and help develop the concrete visitation practice
- have overall responsibility for budget and operations within the defined framework
- actively work with fundraising, room adoptions, foundation applications and relations with sponsors and partners
- serve the board and represent the Family House externally
When the house opens, you will be a visible and present leader with your daily base in the Family House. You must be in touch with the pulse and know the families, the volunteers and everyday life in the house.
Families and the volunteers
The Family House is more than its physical framework. The way families are met is just as important.
Families should experience that there is room to be exactly where they are. Some need community and a conversation. Others need quiet and privacy. And sometimes there should be room for the feelings that have been held back at the hospital to fill the space.
As a leader you must be able to meet families with presence, empathy and calm. But an equally important task will be to create a culture where employees and volunteers are equipped to do the same.
The volunteers will be a significant part of the Family House’s driving force and will among other things contribute with activities and socializing with the families, playing and caring for children, cooking, practical tasks, and helping to create a homely atmosphere in the house.
You will have a central role in recruiting, organizing, motivating and retaining the volunteers and creating a community where they know their role and feel safe seeking support from you.
Collaboration with the hospital and external relations
The Family House must have close collaboration with Aalborg University Hospital. As the leader you will be an important bridge between the Family House and hospital departments. You must build relationships with relevant clinical environments and help ensure hospital staff know about the Family House and which families the offer is relevant for.
Fundraising and external relations will also be a central part of the job. The Family House must annually provide about 1.3–1.4 million DKK in external funding - of which about 1 million DKK through room adoptions and a further 300,000–400,000 DKK through monetary donations or in-kind contributions.
Together with the administrative employee you will actively work with fundraising and relations to sponsors, foundations and other contributors. The board and the Family House’s ambassadors contribute networks and relevant contacts, while you play a central role in developing and maintaining the relationships.
You do not need to be a professional fundraiser, but you must want to build relationships and engage others in a cause you yourself believe in.
Who are you?
Your educational background is not in itself decisive for us. What is crucial is that you can see yourself in the Family House’s purpose and genuinely want to lead it.
We expect that you
- have leadership experience, but you do not necessarily need to have already led an organization or department. Your experience could, for example, be from personnel management, team leadership, coordinating functions or from creating direction and followership among employees or volunteers
- have empathy and human understanding and can meet people in serious and vulnerable life situations with calm, respect and presence
- can accommodate strong emotions without becoming overly involved oneself and at the same time be clear and set respectful boundaries when the situation requires it
- thrive in an outgoing role, seek out relationships and communicate naturally with different people
- take initiative, find solutions and be able to create structure along the way - even when not everything is given in advance
- have a basic financial understanding and be able to take responsibility for the Family House operating within the defined financial framework. The administrative staff will handle a large part of the daily financial and accounting administration
It would be an advantage if you
- have experience with personnel management
- have a health care background or otherwise have in-depth knowledge of people and families in serious and demanding life situations
- have experience from a hospital
- have experience with volunteers and volunteer leadership
- have experience with fundraising, sponsorships, partnerships or foundation applications
- have helped establish or develop a new offering, a function or an initiative
- have experience with communication and relationship work across organizations and professional domains
We do not expect our future leader to be able to check off everything from day one. For us, it is more important that you have the right foundation, commitment and desire to develop in the role than that you have already tried all parts of the job.
We offer
- great influence on how the Family House’s purpose and values are translated into practice
- a versatile leadership role with relations to families, volunteers, the hospital and external partners
- a large degree of independence and room for action within the framework set by the board
- a proactive board that, especially in the establishment phase, will be a sparring partner and contribute to getting the new organization off to a good start
- the opportunity to lead an offering that will make a concrete difference for families during some of their most difficult periods
Reference relationship
You will become the daily manager of TrygFonden’s Family House Aalborg and report to the institution’s board.
The board sets the overall strategic and financial framework, while you will have a large degree of independent responsibility for the daily operation and development of the Family House.
