IT security specialist

Here's what your new workday will look like

You will become part of the IT security section which consists of 13 employees and is part of the area of IT security and support. The section works to translate the university's information security requirements into concrete, practical and usable solutions. We support the entire KU in working securely – in a way that works in everyday life for researchers, students and staff.

Your primary area of responsibility will be to lead the development of the technical areas around IT security on our infrastructure in collaboration with the respective operations sections. You will focus on developing our logging area, including further development of our Elasticsearch platform with regard to security logging and monitoring. You will be a key person in supporting that new and existing systems are secure and support the university's security requirements.

Your main tasks/responsibilities will be the following

• Assist KU-IT's management in the work of complying with KU's policies and guidelines within IT security.
• Further develop and operate KU's central platform for security logging and monitoring with focus on visibility, traceability and efficient incident management.
• Create an overview of security-relevant log sources across the university's system landscape and prioritize improvements to log coverage based on risks and criticality.
• Establish and maintain appropriate logging, alerting and monitoring for critical systems, so cyber attacks and other security incidents can be identified and handled in a timely manner.
• Develop the use of Elasticsearch and related analysis and monitoring capabilities, including correlation of events across systems.
• Support collaboration with KU's Security Operations Center (SOC) by ensuring a high level of data quality and relevant security alerts.
• Participate in analysis, documentation and reporting of security incidents and support forensics investigations.
• Be the professional lighthouse in logging, monitoring and forensics and contribute to the ongoing development of KU's security capabilities.

What do you bring?

You have a relevant education in the form of a bachelor's or master's degree in IT security and a minimum of 3+ years of professional experience in the IT security domain.

We are looking for collaborative/frustration-free/serviceminded colleagues, with experience in one or more of the following areas:

• In-depth knowledge of Elasticsearch as well as Microsoft Defender XDR & Sentinel
• Experience with security log analysis and detection engineering
• Experience with log management

If you have knowledge of the following, it is a plus

• SIEM solutions beyond Elasticsearch
• Database security, preferably Oracle
• Programming including for example KQL, YAML etc.
• Automation

The IT security section is currently under development, so you will have the opportunity to have a large influence on the development of the IT security area.

Salary and terms of employment The weekly working hours are 37 hours including lunch. The position is filled under the Public Sector Collective Agreement for academics in the state (Academic Agreement) with placement as a Special Consultant. There is the possibility of negotiation of a qualification allowance.
