About the job

Do you want to take part in an important societal task in rapid development and contribute to ensuring that the rules in the customs control area are applied correctly? Are you passionate about working with complex law and about ensuring legality and due process when the statutes are translated into reality? Then you may be one of the lawyers we are looking for.

Support effective customs control with legal advice

In the Control Secretariat we support the Danish Customs Administration in the customs-law and administrative-law area. We have an overarching responsibility to support correct and efficient customs control in Denmark. We do this, among other things, by providing internal legal advice to ensure that the agency complies with the law in the control area and keeps up with developments, particularly with regard to the EU customs reform and the society’s increased focus on customs.

In addition, we handle concrete legal casework in a range of areas and provide secretarial support, e.g. control-related and legal input and memoranda to the Danish Customs and Tax Administration’s Directorate and the Ministry of Taxation and Growth. We also participate in national and international cooperation on customs-related tasks, e.g. in the European Commission.

As a lawyer in the office you will have an exciting everyday life with many varied tasks, solved in close collaboration with your colleagues. We deal with everything from trade sanctions, authority cooperation, illegal goods across the border and money laundering to correct control at the border and the EU regulations and requirements for goods control.

Your tasks will include, for example, to

  • advise leaders and employees in the Danish Customs Administration on legal issues within goods control and societal-protective control
  • support correct application of rules in the control-field area and clarify legal basis in connection with new control initiatives, especially within societal-protective control
  • contribute to concrete initiatives that strengthen the rule of law
  • coordinate and quality-assure responses to the Directorate and the Ministry and contribute to ministerial services and parliamentary replies
  • handle legal case processing, including processing of appeals, hearings and preparation of legal memoranda as well as disclosure of information (GDPR)
  • draft cooperation agreements with other authorities
  • contribute to legislative work in both Denmark and the EU and to the negotiations on and implementation of the EU’s customs reform.

We have extensive contact with managers and employees at the different locations of the Danish Customs, other agencies in the Tax Administration, and other public authorities, and we also participate in international meetings. Therefore there may be transport and travel activity that can be adjusted according to needs and possibilities.

As part of your onboarding you will participate in both e-learning, on-the-job training and possibly other internal instruction.

Curious with an overview and focus on development

We imagine that you have a relevant advanced education such as cand.jur. or cand.merc.jur.

If you have experience, it is an advantage if it comes from legal work in a public authority, e.g. police and prosecution service, a management secretariat, a ministry or an agency. It may also be that you have worked with public law at a law firm or in a consultancy.

If you are a recent graduate, it is an advantage if you have gained relevant experience through a student job or similar, and if you are prepared for a steep learning curve.

It is not a requirement that you have knowledge of the customs area or the Tax Administration’s tasks. The most important is that you want to develop yourself with new tasks and areas of work.

In addition we emphasize that you

  • are approachable and good at collaborating with both internal and external partners
  • convey complex issues in precise and simple language
  • can operate at the intersection of politics, law and operations
  • have interest in and preferably experience with administrative law
  • are curious and proactive in solving your tasks
  • can keep an overview and ensure progress – also in periods with many different tasks.

We ensure effective customs control

The Danish Customs Administration has about 800 employees distributed across the country. We come from very different backgrounds and areas of expertise – but we are all driven by participating in an important task, and we are proud of the results we achieve. In the control units we work every day to protect Danish society from illegal and dangerous goods and to ensure that businesses and citizens pay the correct customs.

If you want to collaborate with dedicated colleagues across the country and want to be part of solving an international task that creates value for Denmark and safeguards Danish society, then the Danish Customs Administration is for you. Together we create opportunities across borders.

In the Control Secretariat you will become part of a well-functioning team, where you will have good opportunities to develop your professional and personal competencies. You will have skilled colleagues educated in both law and political science. We have a good community, and we help each other across. Cooperation, flexibility, openness and a smile are a natural part of daily life.
