About the job

Who are we?

The on-call ward in the Psychiatric Department Bornholm consists of a closed/intensive ward regulated for 5 patients and an open ward regulated for 12 patients. On the open ward, one of our beds is earmarked for patient-directed admission, where patients, in outpatient care and with a contract, can admit themselves to the ward for 5 days without going through the emergency department.

You will become part of a well-functioning staff group, which, in our experience, spans a wide range. We have a strong focus on working together with and for the patient across professions, and with us you can always approach a colleague for advice or sparring if you are wrestling with a problem.

The staff group in the ward consists of, among others, nurses, social and health care assistants, doctors, social worker, recovery mentors and service assistants.

The Psychiatric Department Bornholm merged with the Psychiatric Centre Copenhagen (PCK) on 1 May 2025 and therefore belongs organizationally to this centre as a department under its campus.

However, our physical premises have not changed and we remain a smaller department where there is room for strong influence by staff on implementations, initiatives and measures.

You will also have the opportunity to be part of another exciting development for our psychiatric department, as we opened Bornholm’s first psychiatric emergency department in May.

Your everyday life with us

In the ward you will get a good understanding of each patient, just as you will have the opportunity to work with many different diagnostic problems.

You will act as a point of contact for the patients. Your core task will be relationship work, as it is important to build trustful relations with patients and relatives. You will initiate/resume and adjust nursing actions in collaboration with the patient, mono- and multi-disciplinary colleagues and possibly relatives.

Some of your important tasks include

◾ To observe and document both psychiatric and somatic symptoms and actions.

◾ To work with cognitive milieu-therapeutic principles focusing on maintaining daily structure, crisis plans, patient plans, medication administration and psychiatric nursing with the whole person in focus.

◾ To work according to the Safewards principles, with calming methods, de-escalation and low arousal, as prevention of coercion is at the forefront. We have maintenance instructors who provide you with teaching, sparring and support in this regard.

◾ To work from a recovery-oriented approach with focus on hope and dreams. This in collaboration with our recovery mentors.

◾ To actively participate in training our social and health care assistant trainees and nursing students. It is important to us that they have good and educational experiences on the ward.

Who are you?

You are a trained nurse or social and health care assistant, you can be newly graduated or have experience. You work well in teams and are also able to take independent responsibility and initiative.

In addition, you can see yourself in the following

◾ You want to become skilled in psychiatric nursing . You reflect on your own practice and take the initiative for your own learning, and you take shared responsibility for nursing professionalism, collaboration and well-being.

◾ You can adapt to an unpredictable daily life. We do not know when our patients arrive, or how complex their patient journeys are. It is therefore sometimes necessary to adjust the pace of work in a very short time.

◾ You are good at building relationships. The core task is relationship work. Many of our patients have been here before, and there is therefore an opportunity to build a deeper relationship. You must be able to communicate respectfully with our patients with a focus on their individual needs in a treatment course.

We offer

Here is a sample of what we offer

◾ Room to be new. You will get a mentor who is ready to take you on and support you through the first 6 months on the ward. In the first three weeks you will be outside the norming and there will be an introduction program tailored to your needs.

◾ Focus on your competency development. If you are new to psychiatry, you will receive: a course in “Prevention and management of conflicts” as well as the course “Well on the way in psychiatry.” These courses help increase your competencies as a newcomer to psychiatry. There will be travel to Zealand in connection with these courses. There is monthly training in conflict management at the center.

◾ Interdisciplinarity and room for reflection . You will become part of a staff group that places a high value on time for reflection and works closely across professions. There are fixed times for supervision by an external supervisor and annual cross-disciplinary team days, where we meet across shifts.

Salary and terms of employment

You will be employed in mixed shifts and, as a rule, you have weekend shifts every 2nd weekend with 8-hour shifts.

The position is available from January 1, 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.

As a nurse you are employed according to the agreement for Non-Management staff in the Health Sector – 32.17.1

As a social and health care assistant you are employed according to the agreement for wages and employment conditions for social and health personnel - 32.03.1
