About the job

We are looking for a nurse in Herning/Nykøbing Mors prison as part of a reorganization and expansion. The expansion occurs in connection with increased focus on health and interventions for vulnerable detainees in light of the new penal reform.

The position is initially 37 hours per week, and expected to be filled on January 1, 2027 or by agreement.

About the workplace

You will, as an employed prison nurse, be based under the Health Unit in the District Office in the Prison District West with the primary place of service in Herning Prison.

You will, in collaboration with your experienced nurse colleague in the prison, a doctor and a psychiatrist, be responsible for providing health care to the detainees.

We offer somewhat different settings, where a key competence for you will be the ability to collaborate positively in a multidisciplinary environment with prison officers, nurse colleagues, doctors, psychiatrists, external partners such as hospitals and addiction centers.

The Health Unit provides health services at primary care level - with a special focus on complexity, social vulnerability, substance use, mental distress and chronic disease.

The job as prison nurse

Clinical tasks are very diverse and with varying complexity and can best be compared to the workflow in a medical practice, as detainees contact the nurse clinic with problems they would otherwise have contacted their own GP about.

It is crucial in the job that you want to work with a patient group living in a prison environment and often having multi-faceted complex health issues of both physical, mental and social nature, often combined with compliance problems.

The expansion includes a strengthening of the professional effort towards the vulnerable - e.g. through early detection, continuity, stable medication, focus on patient safety and close multidisciplinary collaboration, as well as a rehabilitative approach where we support the detainee's self-care, coping and health competencies. This can include targeted guidance, motivational conversations and support to navigate treatment and appointments - also with a view to better sector transitions upon release.

Prison nursing requires high professionalism as well as an empathetic, humane, inclusive and acknowledging approach, where it is often required to be able to “think outside the box” within the given framework to solve the task.

The nursing tasks include, among others

  • Initial health interviews on admission focusing on screening for chronic and mental disorders.
  • Independent nursing consultations based on the detainees' somatic, mental and chronic issues, including advising and guiding on health-preserving conditions and self-care.
  • Referral to, participation in, and follow-up on doctor/psychiatrist consultations.
  • Planning, follow-up, control and coordination of new and ongoing treatment courses of both acute and chronic character, including performing ECG, LFU, wound care, vaccinations and similar clinical work.
  • Management of medication dosing for the facility's detainees.
  • To act in the role of health professional sparring partner for prison colleagues.

Who are you?

We are looking for a colleague whose professional toolbox is in order, and who can thrive in a dynamic and different environment, with clear frameworks, but basically a place, and a nursing community with ambitions. We focus on quality, standardizing workflows, patient safety and competence development.

We place particular emphasis on the following criteria

  • It is an absolute requirement that you have been trained as a nurse for several years.
  • It is essential that you professionally are able to quickly identify, detect and assess nursing problems and act independently on them.
  • You must have a high degree of self-leadership, independence, sense of responsibility and be able to contribute positively to a small mono-disciplinary work community based on the principles of a self-governing team with distant leadership.
  • You must be able to work in a structured way, and have a focus on patient safety.
  • You must have good collaboration skills with the ability to engage in problem-solving in collaborative relationships, as cross-disciplinary collaboration with the prison's other professional groups is of crucial importance in daily life.
  • You are present and equipped with a friendly, calm, positive, and humane worldview and preferably invest of yourself to create a good shared working environment with learning, job satisfaction, well-being and good cooperative relationships at the forefront.
  • You are endowed with good pedagogical skills and can communicate safely and clearly for guidance to both detainees and staff.
  • You must have broad medical experience from, for example, acute/somatic, addiction treatment, home care, psychiatry or social medical services.
  • You must rest in your professional identity and have an interest in a complex clinical field where somatics, psychiatry, addiction and social vulnerability often overlap.

Salary and terms of employment

Employment and compensation are in accordance with the collective agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and CO10, as well as the state nurses' collective agreement and the agreement on a new pay system for civil servants and civil servant-like nurses in the state between CO10 and any local agreements. In addition, allowances can be agreed depending on experience and qualifications.

  • The position is a permanent position with a weekly working time of 37 hours.
  • The area of employment is Denmark's Prisons, and the primary place of service is the Northern Jutland prisons and supervision, Herning Prison, Østergade 9, 7400 Herning. In addition, you will also serve the Northern Jutland prisons and supervision, Nykøbing Mors Prison, Tinghusvej 2, 7900 Nykøbing Mors.
  • The position is to be filled from January 1, 2027.

Note

There is good opportunity to influence the planning of your own work time based on operations. Working hours are always daytime, with fixed attendance after agreement at 7:30/8:00 and time off after agreement between 15:00/16:00.

Work is generally never on weekends or holidays.

You must be prepared for a combination position, where you also perform the primary nursing coverage in Nykøbing Mors Prison.

We envision three days a week in Herning Prison, and twice a week in Nykøbing Mors Prison.

If needed, a service car can be provided for the transport from Herning to Nykøbing Mors.

During holidays and in case of illness you are self-covering on the sites with the understanding that the health unit's nurses will help cover for each other, so you will, after special agreement, be able to help on other sites nearby.
